  1. To play devil's advocate, the deepfake just builds on the already-pretty-close work of the CGI face. Without it, the deepfake wouldn't look nearly as good. Having said that, there is an argument to be made that they should spend less time on the initial CGI base and more time on AI-trained software like deepfake to perform the last-mile rendering.
  2. Hollywood studio MGM puts itself up for sale at $5bn | Business | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Studio behind James Bond franchise looks to cash in on rocketing prices for content amid TV streaming boom Here are their main franchises and licensing: James Bond Franchise The Handmaid's Tale Franchise Rocky Franchise Pink Panther Franchise Vikings Franchise Legally Blonde Franchise Stargate Franchise RoboCop Franchise Metro 2033 Hobbit (co-owned) Addam's Family Tomb Raider So who do we think is going to scoop them up? I'm betting Apple or Netflix will try.
  3. At first glance most of these things seem reasonable, but the end-result would actually be the deplatforming of online sex workers.
  4. If it had just been her boyfriend (Vanjae Ramgeet) I doubt we'd even be hearing about this.
  5. Brexit failure Looming food and medicine shortages Scottish independence all but guaranteed Plague island And yet...
  6. Yikes. I feel for her, as I would for anyone facing jail time, but she knowingly broke the law and endangered others. To paraphrase someone on resetera, it's not like she broke some obscure local law she didn't know about...these are well-advertised rules that are repeated to travelers over and over right now. Having said that, four months might be harsh, and they are likely doing it to set an example.
  7. After playing Gloomhaven mod on Tabletop Simulator...I can't go back to the physical game. The TTS version is scripted to handle all of the horrible stuff (placing the map, monster setup, drawing modifier cards, etc). I really hope they allow the same people to make a Frosthaven mod. Hell, I'll pay for it!
  8. One thing for sure is that they are going to go after Kamala Harris just as hard as Biden in preparation for her possibly being the nominee in 2024 (though I think Biden's ego will keep him running if he's still in okay health).
  9. Great thread on how Luke's arrival makes TLJ even better, and how this is Luke at the height of his hubris (but is not a bad thing!). Rian Johnson even replies to the final post.
  10. No one anywhere in Canada or the US should be meeting anyone outside their home for Christmas this year. If you do, even if it's legally allowed where you live, you're a part of the problem and contributing to the spread of the disease. I don't care if you've already justified it to yourself, or disagree; all gatherings at this point should be off-limits, and anyone that takes part is complicit. Every gathering is a coin flip, with every death a tails. But the coin flips that end up heads are just as to blame since they had the same chance of causing spread, and death.
  11. All I'm saying is, if they remove Grogu from the show then they will probably lose 50%+ of their audience. We love SW, but people who don't love SW still love Grogu. My wife loves watching the show because they are trying to protect and save him.
  12. Ever had twice-baked potatoes? There are different ways to do it, but I like to bake a potato, split it open after, fill it with the stuff I like and mash the inside up a bit (bacon, butter, chives, etc), close the skin back up as best as possible, and bake it again. It's like mashed potatoes inside a baked potato, with all the "fixings."
  13. Definitely. As long as it follows The Rule of Cool (Rule of Cool - TV Tropes - warning, TV Tropes!) then it gets a pass from me. It's why I don't care about sound in space or curving turbolasers, etc. As long as it's cool and it moves the plot forward, it's fine. Rule of Cool:
  14. Him and his wife also wore Star Wars costumes in 2015 for Halloween right after he was elected PM:
  15. Sounds like your family reads the Rebel (Canada's far-right version of Fox). Trudeau is no angel, he's a politician and that comes with lies and baggage. The story about him sleeping with a student that is so "well known" in conservative circles was well-examined in 2019 and nothing came of it, it appeared to be completely fabricated. One of things it was based off of (if my memory is correct) was a NDA signed by Trudeau and a parent, but apparently that situation revolved around something else entirely involving Trudeau and the parent (not sure if it was sexual, etc). I mean, one of the "scandals" the Conservatives threw at him in 2015 was that he took his shirt off for a mock striptease at a women's fundraising event in the late-2000s to raise money for breast cancer research. The brownface thing was definitely bad judgment on his part, even if he was in his 20s at the time. Though saying that, his actual policies are far more progressive and pro-diversity than anything the Conservatives have done (they openly ran a xenophobic campaign in 2015, which was one reason why Trudeau won). The Liberals are the party of nepotism and corruption in Canada; whenever the Liberals win, money always goes through their friends after they've been in power for a few years. It's frustrating because they are much better for the country (imo) than the Conservatives, who tend to be true believers these days (compared to the 50s-80s of the Progressive Conservative Party, which was much more moderate). Harper was one of Canada's most controlling PMs, and while Trudeau has continued on many of his worst policies (keeping a tight lid on communication, access to information, expansion of executive influence over Parliament), he doesn't come close to Harper in most areas.
  16. Something that is talked about in the fantasy writing community is the idea of soft vs hard magic systems, and I think it applies to Star Wars since it's just space fantasy: Basically, soft magic is where you don't have rules, and hard magic is where you do. Systems with cause-and-effect and "mana" (or some cost) are typically hard magic. A good rule for authors to follow is to never have soft magic be used by the point-of-view character to solve problems. It can be used to create problems, or a third-party can change the course of the narrative with it (Gandalf, for example). Hard magic is better for solving problems since it follows the rule of promise-and-payoff. So if you've ever watched or read something where the hero pulls something out of their ass at the end and it didn't feel earned, it could be because it was a version of soft magic. But on the other hand, soft magic can be great for inspiring awe since it's usually left vague and undefined, and only surfaces to push the plot forward. That's why the Force is so cool (though it exists somewhere between hard and soft, really).
  17. Oh yeah he's a total moron (the author). His argument is effectively "if parties which comprise over 50% of the seats can decide to stay in power rather than have an election (or form new coalitions to do so) then it becomes very hard for the Conservatives to win, and this is a bad thing, and undemocratic."
