Well, apparently the bill gives ByteDance 180 days to sell before the ban goes into effect, so that puts it in, what, September? That seems like very bad timing for the election!

Does the Biden admin think that because the vote was bipartisan that Gen Z is not gonna hold it against Biden? Because I definitely wouldn't count on that.

Hochul says subway crime ‘not statistically significant, but psychologically significant’ WWW.ROUTE-FIFTY.COM The New York governor's supporters say the specter of National Guard troops checking bags will make New Yorkers feel safer, but activists say it’s just a militarized version of stop-and-frisk. Wild to basically just say in plain terms "we're doing this to feed a moral panic."

If you just read a bunch of stuff about climate tech, it seems like there really is a lot of good progress being made a lot of fronts and you can kind of trick yourself into being a little optimistic for a while. But then you read stuff like this, and there's just so, so, so much damage already completely baked in, even if there was the political will and ability to roll about a bunch of fancy new tech on a worldwide scale as fast as possible.

I imagine this is just to try and delay past the election and it'll be like a 7-2 ruling against Trump when they get around to it (still real bad in and of itself!), but just the entire concept of the highest court in the country hearing a case that amounts to "Can the president do crimes with impunity?" feels like some real foundational shit is starting to become unmoored.

Even though the effects are confined to one state right now, I think it's almost on the same level as Dobbs as to how big of an impact politically it is. Supposedly like half of the House caucus are cosponsors on a "fetal personhood" bill that would have the same effect as this ruling Nationwide, but now you have Trump coming out pro-IVF. So you have a huge schism there. And then also it seems like this is a story the media is willing to stick with for a while and make a big deal out of, so it's bumping some of the "Biden is old and sleepy" stuff off of front pages. And then you have the true fuckin' weirdos like Chris Rufo using this as an opportunity to say that they want to go further and ban birth control.
