Unexploded bomb from WW2 apparently... I wonder how many more of these things are out there.

Thousands across Europe.

In Germany, areas of towns have to be frequently evacuated due to the discovery of unexploded Allied bombs.

There are large sections of northern France that are restricted areas due to all the unexploded ordinance from the First World War.

This actually happened in my kindergarten's playground. One of the kids in my class was digging and hit metal and it was assumed to be a pipe. The whole area ended up having to be evacuated when it was discovered to be an unexploded...something or the other...from the bombing my hometown received during WWII.

How many years does it take before the explosives (especially from WWI) degrade to the point where an explosion is not likely? Or does that even happen?

My limited understanding is that explosives from the 1800s can still go off and that in the time since then, degradation of the detonator makes an explosion more likely and not less. Not sure if that’s universal or if degradation to the point of harmlessness happens at all.

@skillzdadirecta

Here's a news article also linking to more of such a recent event in Germany, thought you'd find it interesting. It's almost somewhat of a normal occurrence there really. Actual explosions are rare from what I know but these things being found during construction or similar is a pretty common thing.

Damn that's crazy! I knew active minefields were a concern in certain parts of the world but I had no idea unexploded bombs were.

Reminds me of recently reading Ozzy Osborne's book and him explaining how they played in bomb craters as their sandboxes because their hometown was so heavily bombed in WWII.

It's like where I grew up in post-riot, crack era Newark New Jersey. We played in burnt-out abandoned buildings and vacant lots... we didn't have to worry about unexploded bombs though.

Oh yeah, I know about Newark. I used to go see my friends in Jersey in the early 2000's and it was still like that...I mean almost everything around a certain radius of NYC was like that I guess but I know what you mean. Used to go to Secaucus and Fort Lee a lot praying that my shitty '83 Caprice would make it across the GWB so at least I wouldn't break down ON the bridge
