Satoshi Kon's Masterpiece: Perfect Blue - Out Today on Blu-Ray!

Recommended Posts

Sadly reviews are out that GKids didn't have the original film elements and this bluray release is a DNR of the non-2k UK bluray release from 2015. And then the Japanese licensors decided that the US release couldn't have the lectures and bonus contents from the older dvd releases, leaving this kinda bare-bones =/

I gladly sold my older Manga dvd for $20 to afford this new bluray, if anything, for the chance that dvd disc rot wouldn't affect me. But still, it's kinda sad =/

As someone who looks at bonus content 1% of the time I don't really mind. I still have the original Manga release and don't even remember any lecture stuff.

It's more of a statement of how under-appreciated this movie is. Japan didn't hold the extras back for any exclusivity for themselves, and once again US distributors can only make due with they're given =/ Even the UK is being given an exclusive boxset that's the same video encode and missing extras... Japan just needs to get their shit together with these types of releases and let fans of any nation create a worthy release for once

@Greatoneshere Time flies. Tokyo Godfathers came out yesterday, my copy arrived today. I might watch it later and give you my impressions.

My first thoughts are: It comes in a slipcase! But the slipcase has a rotten tomatoes sticker on it (who gives a fuck!)

Also this one is supposedly remastered on a 4K scan as well

Definitely interested in impressions, let us know! Did you end up watching the Perfect Blue or Millenium Actress blurays?

I recently watched Perfect Blue because of this thread actually. I'm not an anime guy whatsoever and I can't remember if I commented on it in the general movie thread as a disclaimer.

I thought it was definitely interesting and visually very cool on many occasions which is the main thing that stuck with me. I'm interested in checking out another film by him though to see if I get into his work in general. What would be a good one to go with next?

Perfect Blue was his first work, so you may as well go in chronological order: he next made Millenium Actress, then Tokyo Godfathers, then the 13-episode anime TV series Paranoia Agent, and finally the film Paprika before his untimely death.

Basically what @Greatoneshere said. Unfortunately his body of work is very small. That being said Paranoia Agent is hard to find so I’d just suggest sticking to his movies. Tokyo Godfathers is probably his most “normal” movie with Paprika being a bit more imaginative.

If you want some deep cuts check out Roujin Z which Kon did the backgrounds on.

Also, I don’t remember if I mentioned it in this thread (and too lazy to look) but there is a book called Satoshi Kon The Illusionist that came out in 2009 (? Seems so long ago) which is a pretty much a biography of him and an outline of his career and such. A good read if you can get ahold of it.

I kind of only mentioned it briefly but Satoshi Kon always seems to use the music of Susumu Hirasawa in his soundtracks and the same is for this show, and he really nails it in the intro

Truly an intro that only @Dodger can appreciate

Susumu Hirasawa will always get all the credit for the Berserk 1997 soundtrack. Perfectly fit that manga/show.
