Trump, stung by midterms and nervous about Mueller, retreats from traditional presidential duties

But his mood apparently has changed as he has taken measure of the electoral backlash that voters delivered Nov. 6. With the certainty that the incoming Democratic House majority will go after his tax returns and investigate his actions, and the likelihood of additional indictments by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, Trump has retreated into a cocoon of bitterness and resentment, according to multiple administration sources.

Behind the scenes, they say, the president has lashed out at several aides, from junior press assistants to senior officials. “He’s furious,” said one administration official. “Most staffers are trying to avoid him.”

Publicly, Trump has been increasingly absent in recent days — except on Twitter. He has canceled travel plans and dispatched Cabinet officials and aides to events in his place — including sending Vice President Mike Pence to Asia for the annual summits there in November that past presidents nearly always attended.

Although it was Veterans Day, Trump bucked tradition and opted not to make the two-mile trip to Arlington National Cemetery in northern Virginia to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as presidents since at least John F. Kennedy have done to mark the solemn holiday.

Just as Trump was returning to Washington on Sunday evening, Pence was heading to Asia in the president’s place, and at his first stop greeted Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Trump’s absence, experts said, is notable, and a glaring affront to many Asian leaders.

“It matters more in Asia than other regions because ‘face’ is so important,” said Matthew P. Goodman, a senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a former White House coordinator for Asia-Pacific strategy during the Obama and George W. Bush administrations. “Your willingness to go out there is a sign you're committed and not going is a sign you're not.”

The Asia change was from a month ago but otherwise :feelsgood:

The Asia thing just happened though?

Unless he changed it last month, but that still seems like a weird move on his part.

As @Chairslinger said, you can make these guys seem small verbally, but the one way to really do it is to beat them at the ballot box.

When you've had your entire life and 'wealth' handed to you on a silver platter, pushback and problems must feel like insurmountable tasks. Too bad most humans learn by the age of 4 or so that stomping your feet and refusing to continue daily life is not a realistic solution.

I'm 100% ok if he does this though

Sometimes we overthink Trump because he is a simple creature and even the best of us slide into the 12 dimensional chest mindset.

We dismiss it because of its absurdity, but what if Trump really did think a red wave was coming? He thought the polls were "fake" and his special sauce that won him 2016 was going to prove everyone wrong again.

If he really did beleive that, he may be staring straight at reality for the first time.

Have you seen the Twitter feed the guy gets? There's an account that shows you who he follows and it is scary how much of an echo chamber it is there.

I wonder if he ever reads the replies to any of his tweets. They pretty much completely consist of people screaming at him about how terrible he is at everything (which is what they should be).

It used to be a good mix of zealots screaming back and forth, but now it feels like the replies are 90%+ strongly anti-Trump.

As supporting evidence for the bolded, we've gotten plenty of reporting that he really does convince himself to believe what he wants to believe, even though that sometimes changes on a day-to-day basis.
