We are pleased to announce that Microsoft and @PlayStation have signed a binding agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. We look forward to a future where players globally have more choice to play their favorite games.

Just saw this got its own thread.

I don’t expect CoD on any other subscription library service unless it was negotiated prior.  That was always the play.

This was the only reasonable outcome for CoD. The rest of the IP will be Xbox exclusive.

We’ll have to wait and see.  I could see select games making it over, but the norm will be exclusive.

Sony is going to eat so much crow if Crash or Tony Hawk doesn’t reach them.

Why is that so?

Those games helped pushed PlayStation consoles in the past with (timed) exclusivity.  That includes N Sane Trilogy, which was announced by Sony at E3 and published by them in Japan.

Games like Crash 1 and Tony Hawk 2 were also a huge part of the PS1’s cultural identity.

This is true but nobody gives a shit about Crash in 2023 and Tony Hawk is pushing 60.

We don’t know how well Crash 4 did comparatively, but the Trilogy remake sold over 10 million.  Likewise, CTR and Tony Hawk 1+2 both broke franchise sales records in the first month.

People certainly do give a shit in 2023. The ball is in Microsoft’s court.

The deal means Microsoft and Sony’s Call of Duty battle is over

Sony was first offered 10 years multi-platform for CoD, 5 years for everything else.  Only the CoD portion remained in the final deal.

Microsoft’s intent with other Activision IP laid pretty clear with that.  I think they tried to play nice initially, even though it’s still not much.

Makes sense that Sony got a worse deal now that they "lost." It's long seemed like Xbox would like to follow the lead of the rest of MS and become more platform agnostic, it's just that the economics of gaming platforms hasn't really allowed it. That could well change in 10 years.

Microsoft apparently planned for that to change within 5 years, with the exception of CoD.  By then, any existing contracts with Sony would have been wrapped up.  There's also this:

Ryan told the court the Xbox boss Phil Spencer's original proposal for an agreement to keep Call of Duty and other Activision games on PlayStation did not adequately address his concerns because it focused on catalogue games.

"It is our opinion that it was not meaningful," he said. "In our opinion, this list represented a particular selection of older titles that would remain on PlayStation. So for example, Overwatch is on there but Overwatch 2 is not, which is the current version of the game."

If the 5 year deal didn't even include forthcoming releases (at the time), it was pretty much a nothing proposal.
