Favorite YouTube channels

Recommended Posts

I find myself watching YouTube more than anything else lately. Who are your faves?

Mine mostly tend to fall in line with my interests.

History Hits - a variety of mini docs and historians. I like the episodes where historians reviews scenes from movies and shows. I discovered Eleanor Jenega through this channel and now she’s one of my favorite historians.

Dominic Noble - book fanatic who reviews new books and compares movie adaptations to the books they were based on. He mostly does fantasy, but I loved his reviews of 50 Shades and Twilight. He rips them apart.

Jaime French - millennial who mostly does pop culture stuff. I mainly watch her movie reviews from the 90s and 00s. I’m familiar with a lot of them and her humor appeals to me.

Cinema Therapy - Johnathan Decker(therapist) and his friend Alan Seawright(filmmaker) review movies and analyze the relationships and personalities in them. They’re funny while also handling serious subjects thoughtfully.

Ask a Mortician - Caitlin Doughty, a funeral industry reformer talks about death. My favorite videos are the history episodes.

Gamesack - middle aged dude reviewing retro games. A lot of them are interesting, some are more techie and bore me.

AVGN - I feel like everyone knows who the Nerd is.

Distracted Nerd - gives commentary/summaries on movies from the 80s/90s/00s: “how original!”, I know, except his videos are some of the most entertaining I’ve seen, infinitely better than Cinema Sins and others and consistently makes me laugh. He is probably the most underrated YouTuber out there and is easily one of my favorite channels alongside…

OverSimplified - jfc this guy is amazing. Accurately and comically details historical events/battles/eras. My wife hates history and finds it boring, but loves this channel. The downside is that it’s just a single dude making the videos so there can be anywhere from 6-12months between releases.

Physics Related

PBS Space Time - My favourite overall channel.  Matt O'Dowd is great at simplifying (somewhat) quantum physics and cosmology.

Sabine Hossenfelder  -  Great takes on science, with a specialty in quantum physics.

Fermilab - The scientists at the Chicago-based collider to some great entry level explanations on physics concepts.

Other Science

Anton Petrov -- gives quick hits on new science (primarily cosmology-related) papers.

Veritasium -- Long form documentaries on lots of cool science stuff.

Science Tangential

Mark Rober -- Makes crazy engineering projects, and he is truly entertaining.

Stuff Made Here -- Goes through the development process of lots of cool stuff.

Cooking  -- All of these channels show how to make great food

Brian Lagerstrom

Joshua Wiseman

Sam the Cooking Guy

ThatDudeCanCook

Guga

Sous Vide Everything

Epicurious

PC Gaming

Gamers Nexus -- Steve is one of the most brutally honest hardware reviewers.  I may not always agree with what he says, but I always want to here it.

JayzTwoCents -- Watercooling porn.

Hardware Unboxed  -- Interesting takes on PC Hardware

Digital Foundry -- The definitive channel on all things graphics related.

General Entertainment

Good Mythical Morning -- They eat stuff, and say what is better.  In a very entertaining way.

How Ridiculous -- Videos of them destroying stuff or doing crazy challenges

The TRY Channel -- Irish people eating/drinking things and making "witty" Irish jokes about them.

BeardMeatsFood -- Every video is of "Mr. Beard" doing a restaurant eating challenge.

The History Guy - All sorts of historical topics

Daily Dose of Internet- Funny internet videos twice a week (not daily as the name implies)

penguinz0 - love his deadpan delivery on various current events/topics

Law&Crime Network - Videos/news reports on various court proceedings around the US

Easy Allies - The best game reviews!

Jang's Lego Reviews - If you're into Lego, this one is great to see reviews of all current and some past sets as well.

Animtoon, a former Disney guy helps curate student animations and shares them here.

https://youtube.com/@AnimtoonOfficial

Beryl Shereshewsky, a former CNN/Great Big Story host has one of the most wholesome communities on YouTube where folks share their favorite home cooking.

https://youtube.com/@BerylShereshewsky

Foolish Baseball, how about advanced baseball stats and odd stories presented like gaming facts?

https://youtube.com/@FoolishBaseball

Look Mum No Computer, a dude with fat too much time that loves all things electronic and analog. He's currently in the process of converting an old church organ into a MIDI controller that still controls the organ pipes.

https://youtube.com/@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER

ReligionForBreakfast, just nothing but semi-deep dives into all things religious. He covers everything from UFOs to Biblically Accurate Angels to Zelda demonology.

https://youtube.com/@ReligionForBreakfast

Sauce Stache, he's a fucking vegan food wizard. You don't even have to be vegan to appreciate how much of a food alchemist he is.

https://youtube.com/@SauceStache

Yeah, that looks like a fine list. I tried to keep it to smaller channels that aren't going to be as well known.

Urbanism:

Adam Something - my favorite stuff he makes is when he shits on Elon Musk for tech bro stuff

CityNerd - He has a very analytical approach. Lots of charts, which I love.

Climate Town - Very funny, mostly rips on energy companies, which is great

Not Just Bikes - Not going to lie, his content has been getting kind of old for me lately, but still probably the best place to start for people who haven't gotten into urbanism yet.

History:

Atun-Shei Films - his content about the Civil War and early New England history is probably the best out there

Extra History - Bite-sized history content that actually has a consistent upload schedule, which is rare for the genre

Miniminuteman - Focuses on archaeology/geology. His series and debunking Ancient Apocalypse was really good

OverSimplified - 100% the best history content on YouTube, and it's hilarious.

Movies:

Cinema Therapy - like @CastlevaniaNut18 said, they're really good breaking down movies from a psychological/relationship perspective

Corridor Crew - they break down a lot of special effects in a way that's really simple for dumb-dumbs like me

History Buffs - analyzes historical movies based on how accurate they are.

Pitch Meeting - it's like CinemaSins but without the snark.

Other:

Decoding the Unknown - A podcast that is pretty much about debunking conspiracy theories/mysteries.

Jet Lag: The Game - A group of guys basically turn travel into a kind of board game. The season that's on right now is "playing Capture the Flag across Japan" (they can only travel by train)

Johnny Harris - gets a little too "vice/vox" for me sometimes, but he's a great storyteller for serious topics

Some More News - weekly deep dives into some topic

Watcher - can't really explain it because they do lots of different stuff, but they're hilarious. My favorite series they've done is "Puppet History."

*GMM is more of a variety show with a focus on food-related content than it is a straight-up food channel.

**Technically The Try Guys but I have no interest in the rest of their content and I am not subbed to them.

There are a couple of small channels I missed that are totally worth checking out.

Aging Wheels, this guy just has fun with stupid projects within a realistic budget. He's currently trying to convert a twenty year old Ford Escape into a 1000HP electric monster which he swears he's learning just to figure out how to turn an old school bus into the world's longest electric pickup truck/RV.

https://www.youtube.com/@agingwheels

People Make Games is probably my favorite channel for a nice deep dive into gaming and the industry. They don't really cover day to day news, more like "let's spend half an hour talking about competitive Excel" or "let's dig in to how game developers are hiding their crunch by outsourcing it". Good stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/@PeopleMakeGames

The Tim Traveler is great if you've ever wanted watch a travel blog with super interesting historical facts, but all the travel was to really off beat places like abandoned hotels, abandoned stadiums, weird trains that go up mountains, and the tallest "mountain" in Denmark.

I'm kind of bummed that GMM kind of went away from stuff like "will it" after the mythical kitchen was started. And I get it - the mythical kitchen costs a lot of money, they want it to be its own content factory rather than simply supporting GMM. But we now get like one "will it" episode a year.

I don't like all of the Mythical kitchen content but I do love their "last meals" series.

The Try Guys... when it's funny, it's really funny, when it's not... Their "without a recipe" series they do is always gold, though.

I'm sure if it was a massive click generator they'd do it more often. But I'm also pretty sure they have stated they don't like doing the same things all the time and they don't want content to get old and I have to agree with them. I like them for the variety rather than being a food show. It's part of the reason why GMMORE is, IMO, better than the main show. I'm not bored by the main content, but MOREs have a high chance of getting numerous laughs out of me. Pretty much never laugh during the main show even tho I am entertained. My favorite newest game they have been playing is the one with Nicole. Where they have to complete a series of tasks and whoever does it the fastest wins. Love that shit.

I mean, I love "Will It..." but I'm glad they aren't popping them out as much as they used to. While they put out one recently, what I had missed the most is when they are given a food item from like 8 places and then have to guess it blindfolded. Tho, I'm kinda tired of Rhett always guessin' the same restaurant for like 3 items. I get that it's a game, but he's just banking on Link getting zero or one while he gets two. Also, getting tired of gut checks, especially when they don't have a lot of items. Most recent one had them filling time with nonsense cuz they only had like 24 items.

Also, I don't watch any of the mythical kitchen stuff. Not a huge fan of Josh as a frontman. I did watch the Rhett and Link last meals tho. Also, I never watch anything with a celebrity in it. The content just feels off. Like I'm watching Jimmy Fallon or something. I tried watching the jack black one years ago, but I couldn't even do that despite being a fan.

Oh, and I hate Keith's Lewberger friends on eat the menu. They are the WORST "guests". The Popkins guy is great as is Keith's Wife. There is also a newer/rare guy, who seems to always enjoy what he's eating. He is a good guest too, somename James.

I love these “experts in a given field review scenes from these movies/shows.”

So entertaining.

Except when you find the occasional time that you find an expert on something that you at least know enough about to know that they're full of shit. I find to be mostly true of like "modern military experts."

Modern military tactics are so highly specialized that you can't trust that someone trained in one field knows a single fucking thing about what they're talking about when it comes to a different field. "Modern combat engineer reacts to scene from black hawk down" or whatever. That shit happened before he was born and he isn't a historian.

My favorite ones are probably the ones from History Hit.

My favorites are the medieval historians.

So I had an idea about this thread, why not use it to share vids we each come across to share with one another going forward? Sort of like the "what are you reading/listening to" or "what have you recently watched"? I'll start if that's alright:

I really enjoy the GQ series where so many of my favorite actors break down their careers.

I saw that video on my feed today, I wanted to watch it but I didn't have time. Specifically because most of his most memorable performances are so non-verbal. In Valhalla Rising, he doesn't even speak.

I'll further this: if anyone hasn't watched Jet Lag the Game yet, it's one of my favorite things that has come up on YouTube in a long while

This is the latest episode (next episode comes out tomorrow)

In this season, they are playing Capture the Flag across Japan. The "pilot" idea for the show was Sam (of Wendover Productions) had to break a law in every US state. It's evolved since then into a game show, and it is so good.

  • 3 weeks later...

Here's a little history deep cut. This channel is called Modern History TV

It's hosted and ran by the owner of rebellion developments (they make the Sniper Elite games). Basically it's a rich guy that has decided to dedicate his life to LARPing as a medieval English knight, and holy shit, his content is *fantastic*. He doesn't upload very often, but every single one of his videos is great.

Just some rich dude following his passion. It would be like if James Cameron started a video about deep sea submersibles. I would subscribe day one.
