General Gaming Composer Mick Gordon breaks his two-year long silence about his clashes with id over the DOOM Eternal soundtrack, points finger at executive producer Marty Stratton

If you recall a couple of years ago around the time of DOOM Eternal's release, there was a bit of hubbub over the audio quality (or lack thereof) of the game's soundtrack.  It was eventually revealed by Mick that he wasn't responsible for mixing most of the tracks and he publicly stated that he doubted that he would ever with id/Bethesda again after having collaborated with them on the two DOOM titles, the two Wolfenstein titles, and Prey.  About a month later, Marty Stratton (the game's executive producer) posted an open letter on Reddit where he claimed that Mick was "unreliable" and "difficult to work with" after missing a couple of deadlines for the delivery of the soundtrack and that id/Bethesda wouldn't be working with Mick going forward.

 

Today, Mick released his own (very lengthy, very detailed, and very interesting) open letter in which he claims Stratton lied about the events surrounding the DOOM Eternal OST in that Reddit post from 2020 and that Stratton offered him a "six-figure sum" to never speak about it again - an offer that Mick apparently declined.

The open letter is definitely worth a read in its insight into an aspect of the game industry's "sausage making" process, just as long as you keep in mind that it is in no way intended to present an unbiased, objective viewpoint  of the situation.

Mick's music was too good for me to ever bother with that old reddit post and now Reddit comments are siding with Mick and saying Marty fucked up.  Good enough for me to take Mick's side since the music is good.

Difficult to work with from a producer usually means they invented deadlines and tried to micromanage and probably constantly interrupted their productivity.

I personally think his Doom soundtracks are abysmal but I sure love to see an unreasonable asshole boss be put in their place. Especially with a "difficult to work with" dropped which is usually bullshit code for "I didn't like them because they had standards".

I just hope it doesn't affect his relationship with Microsoft going forward because his work on Killer Instinct was great and it sounds like even with a tight deadline things went well.

I mean, gonna buy the fuck outta the next doom, but I'm on team Mick unless we get another Depp v Heard. DOOM Beyond Eternal could be made by sacrificing babies and I'd still get it.

Jeff Grubb actually broke down what happened on his show, (or read the post by Mick Gordon) and it sounds totally believable and shitty. Like, he wasn't even working on the soundtrack when they announced preorders for it. It sounds like people at id were working on the soundtrack and using his name when he wasn't even working on the soundtrack.
