Duterte is one of the strangest autocrats currently in power:

 

- Hates drug users/dealers

- Hates God

- Hates human rights

- Hates COVID-19 protocol violators

- Hates luxury cars

- Favors greater autonomy for the Muslim minority due to historical oppression

I think Duterte is just legitimately insane.

I have a pretty small sample size to draw from, but in my experience with American based Filipinos… you can add “is beloved” to that list.

I work with quite a few and I can say my experience is the same.

It makes sense that the Filipinos who could afford to get out skew towards loving the fascist doe.

In my experience it’s more about not believing the worst things said about him combined with thinking that the things he’s addressing are worth a somewhat heavy hand.

Most of the Filipinos I know got out via joining the Navy when we had the bases over there. From the stories I heard from them, very few came from wealthy/affluent Filipino families.
