Finally watched Get Out. So....

Recommended Posts

I loved the movie. This is the second film from 2017 after Baby Driver I saw recently, and those two, plus Last Jedi, all went into places I wasn't expecting (for the better). But damn, the more I think about the story, the more I'm wtfing.

Spoiler

So, Rose actually had sex with her grandparents, in a sense, because their minds are in the bodies of the man and woman she was intimate with and lured to the house.

Damn, wtf? But my gf and I had suspicions of Rose for a while because at one point, Chris walks upstairs and everyone stops talking and looks up. And when she goes up later to get him, she goes, "You left me down there by myself!" But she should be saying, "Hey, my whole family stopped talking in unison and looked up, that was strange."

It's a slow starter because really, it's establishing Chris and Rose's relationship and the simple awkwardness of meeting her parents for the first time. But all the building blocks are essential and pay off.

Spoiler

Hell, just the simple stuff like her messing with her bangs during the movie. She's uncomfortable with it because she normally doesn't have her hair like that. Her normal hair is in a ponytail. Little stuff like that was really cool.

That kid who plays her brother never fails to creep me out in any movie he's in. He's an unsettling looking dude.

His character in Tyrel - a movie with a similar premise as Get Out - is almost worse in some ways, though he’s arguably not the most repulsive character in that film. Many who watch it might have a tough time seeing Michael Cera the same way again for a while.

Both of Jordan Peele's flims, Get Out and Us, are excellent.

I went ahead and bought Us and look forward to watching it. In a sense, he kind of reminds me of M. Night?

Spoiler

He writes and directs his own films, and his first film was a smaller, more suspense-oriented movie with a big twist. Most of what I've heard about Us is great and it's not a huge movie either. I wonder if he's a couple movies away from a critically mixed one and then eventually gets a crack at Last Airbender.

It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I don't think she had sex with a body that her grandparents took over their minds. She only lured in the original body/mind, and then once they got taken over, she moved on to the next dude. It's been awhile though, so I could have that wrong.

You are both right. Even though she moves on once the body is taken over, she had sex with a body that now belongs to a family member. In her mind she’s had sex with them. It’s a weird thought experiment

General audiences connected more with Get Out but I personally found Us to be more interesting and better directed. I think Us was too weird for most people - so hopefully Jordan Peele doesn't steer far away from strangeness with his next movie.

I really enjoyed Us, but if you have a certain kind of brain, I can see how that movie just 100% doesn’t work for you.

Spoiler

I’ve heard from people who got so caught up on the specifics of the Tethered and their whole below-ground situation that it completely took them out of the movie. Like logistically, how does any of that work?

Yeah, I understand people who can't get over that stuff but I always try to buy in.

Spoiler

None of it makes any actual sense, but as usual with otherwise good films, it doesn't matter. Same with a duplicating machine in The Prestige or Looper's unnecessary need for time travel.
