NPD June 2021: Ratchet & Clank #1 and series high, Mario Golf #3, Scarlet Nexus #5, PS5 fastest-selling console launch-aligned, Xbox Series X #1 in dollars and sets new Xbox record, Switch #1 in units, hardware sales up 112%

Records records everywhere!

NPD takes:

  • Hardware the obvious big story of June. Xbox Series the star of the month, but all major platforms showed double or triple digit dollar sales growth vs YA. Demand nowhere near satiated, supply still a massive challenge.
    • PlayStation 5 remains the fastest unit selling console hardware platform in U.S. history (lifetime sales through 8 months in market, excluding portables).
    • Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform during 2021's first half in both dollar and unit sales.
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart debuted as June's best-selling game, achieving the highest launch month dollar sales of any title in franchise history. Launch month dollar sales more than doubled those of the previous high, set by Ratchet & Clank in April 2016.
  • Sony's DualSense Wireless Controller Midnight Black was the best-selling accessory of June 2021, while the DualSense Wireless Controller White led in first-half sales. Three of the top 4 best-selling accessories of June were DualSense Wireless Controllers.
  • June 2021 consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories grew 5% when compared to a year ago, totaling $4.9 billion. First half 2021 consumer spending reached $28.9 billion, a 15% increase when compared to the same period in 2020.

Other stuff:

  • FFVII Remake jumps from 81 to 10 on the Playstation chart.
  • Sea of Thieves jumps from 36 to 20 on the Top 20 overall.
  • Tony Hawk 1+2 jumped from 51 to 17 on the Top 20 overall.

So PS5 still fastest selling, but Switch sold more hardware, and MS made the most hardware money on Series X sales (which sells for the same as PS5).

…is this just an odd, round about way of saying Series X outsold PS5 in June?

I was wondering the same thing, but I looked at the original news and they never specifically mention Series X. They're lumping in both the Series S and Series X into the same category, so saying the Series X sold more would be inaccurate. They are referring to the S/X platform in general, which would make sense.

Like it really matters anyway. Every unit that is released on both Sony and MS side sell out in minutes. If MS managed to release more units than Sony, they'd likely be leading over them right now just based on supply and demand. The real teller will be three years from now once they are both sitting on shelves and readily available.

If that’s the case it’s almost more impressive. Because then MS is still moving more next gen hardware than Sony in June, since to make more $ off hardware sales they’d have to sell more S units which are at a much lower price point than the PS5.

Right now, NPD is saying it’s all about supply. If you get more supply out that month, you were going to sell the most as everything is selling out.

Because the amount they’re selling is so high, the PlayStation 5 remains the fastest selling console launch aligned. Switch sold the most units, and Xbox was number one in dollars and marked an all time high for the Xbox brand.

Yeah these results are all the more impressive when you take into account what short supply there is out there.

But yo...at the end of the day this is good news for each company. Cheers all around. :coffee::mhug::coffee:

Something that interest you, is that according to NPD, the handheld that would be the fastest all around selling is the game boy advance. That is still number one. PS5 is number 1 just looking at consoles.

Interesting that the GBA still holds that record for handhelds. But after thinking about it, it actually kinda makes sense. People were ready for a really big, true jump to the "next-gen" Game Boy at the time and there wasn't a whole lot of competition for it at the time. Not even mobile phones yet!

When Nintendo switched to the DS line, I could probably expect some people to be hesitant at first since it was kind of a dramatically different piece of hardware. And the launch wasn't terribly impressive, either. Plus, Nintendo now had a direct competitor with the release of the PSP - the first true rival since...what? The Game Gear, I guess. Which was well past its heyday by 2004/2005. So sales were split between Sony and Nintendo's hardware. And the PSP probably didn't fly off shelves since the launch price of $250 was probably a bit high for some gamers.

And it's been well recorded that the 3DS and Vita didn't exactly blast off the line at the beginning either...so wow. Yeah, after thinking about it, it does make sense the GBA is still the record holder. ....cool. Alright, enough rambling! :p

At that point, it felt like we were in the standard Gameboy phase forever. That and a $99 price point probably were the perfect storm, which is interesting considering GBA was a thing for, like, 3 years until the DS.

Yeah, GBA had an incredibly short life compared to the Game Boy...it lasted a *little* longer in Japan but DS basically took over everywhere else in the world. Slowly, but once it picked up momentum (and the Lite released) there was no stopping it!
