More air assaults tonight and the videos out of Kyiv are just constant explosions and the chatter of gunfire. It's almost certainly the Gepards doing work vs. those drones. Weirdly, they're perfect for it. The idea that West German anti-aircraft artillery is working in Kyiv vs. Iranian drones controlled by Russia is so strange compared to the background of war that I'd been conditioned to expect.

I watched Network a couple years back for the first time. Of all the great scenes in that movie, the scene where Ned Beatty explains the capitalist system to Beale is one of the greatest. The camera work in that scene alone adds so much to his powerful performance. The movie, and this scene specifically, was so on point. "There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T and Dupont. Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon..."

Supreme Court limits Clean Water Act for wetlands.
CayceG replied to CastletonSnob's topic in The Political Re-Education Camp
The waters in question were not directly adjacent to normal rivers and streams covered in the "Waters of the United States" law, but rather the wetlands between those adjacent wetlands and dry land. It's not great. I don't know yet how this will impact what I do (water treatment) but I know a lot of smart people are going to be lobbying to get this reversed. -
Movies October Sky, and movies that are ruined by knowing the truth
CayceG replied to a topic in The Performing Arts Centre
I hated October Sky. It was showed in school when we had a free day or just had a hungover substitute. I saw it probably 10 times between 2001 and 2005. But you're right, finding out the truth can sometimes really ruin movies. October Sky is a pretty good example. I'm going to try and remember a movie like that for me. I know there are a couple, but I can't come up with them. -

Yeah, I think this is a good fight to fight. But I don't think it should be the main message in places like PA, WI, and MI. Nor do I think it should suck resources from there.

The point of F-16s is to give the Ukrainians the ability to fight in the air from long range. The radars and missiles on their MiG-29s and Su-27s just aren't of the same caliber as those on the F-16. The F-16's radar can see farther and the AIM-120 can shoot farther. This will aid Ukrainian pilots in being able to engage Russian fighters from a farther distance, decreasing risk of being shot down.

re: the F-16 news I think the Euros had been pawning off supporting Ukraine on the US. They had come out to say they'd provide training support and other things to the UAF. But they never actually said they'd give Ukraine F-16s. Granted, the UK and France don't operate F-16s. But that's beside the point. The US, had so far not said they'd be up to transferring F-16s and everyone was sort of finger-pointing towards the US about how we'd have to approve technology transfer if another country provided the fighters. Now, the US has said it will allow others to transfer F-16s to Ukraine. So the ball is back in Europe's court after the finger-pointing. I think the US called the Euro-bluff. But none of this gets Ukraine the tools they need to increase their military capability in a way that can do more to support a Ukrainian offensive.

I wonder why they're so coy about when their air defenses are responsible for downing some aircraft? In this case, this was well inside Russia and might mean that Ukraine has redeployed some units, or added range with the deployment of a Patriot battery. So I can understand wanting to avoid confirming that. But if they're just going to wait a couple of days and then admit it, what's really the point?
