  1. If the Federal Conservatives could bring out the vote in Ontario like Doug Ford does, they would form the Government.
  2. It got so little play in the Canadian media, that no one is whining about it.
  3. Charest is a Liberal -- I don't think he is electable. Pierre Poilievre is too far right -- I don't think he is electable East of Manitoba Patrick Brown has checkered sexual harassment history -- I don't think he is electable. Leslyn Lewis is a staunch social conservative -- I don't think she is electable. Conservatives are in for a rough ride.
  4. This contract puts Carr at ~$35/year over the next 4 years -- the 7th highest paid QB in the league. Probably about FMV.
  5. I haven’t left the house since we heard he tested positive. Kids were put back in masks (my high schooler didn’t want to, so we moved him to online). On Tuesday, my wife started having the sniffles - and no one has left the house since. Yesterday her test was negative, today mine was positive.
  6. Tested positive this morning. We went to dinner with some high school friends on Saturday (fairly large group of 9 people). Mid-way through dinner, I asked a friend where his wife was.... He told me she didn't come because she wasn't feeling well. He tested positive on Sunday. So far, it's like a mild cold, with a VERY light headache, and some body aches. No fever.
  7. I did some streaming early on: 1) My internet connection from my ISP has intermittent "blips" where I would get momentary pixilation (sometimes for up to 30 seconds). It's annoying on streaming video. Kills the experience for gaming. 2) The lag was better than I expected, but still noticeable. I play a lot of driving games, where lag has more of an impact, so streaming doesn't really fit what I want.
  8. A major blizzard is set to hit three provinces. Here's what to expect | CBC News WWW.CBC.CA People in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northwestern Ontario are being urged to stock up and hunker down before the arrival of what could be one of the worst storms in decades. This is peak 2022.
  9. 1) This portion of the Budget has received very little media coverage. If Riley hadn't posted here, I probably wouldn't have noticed it. 2) Canada already has pretty good Hate Speech laws, I wonder if this specific law is even needed. I really think that almost all Holocaust denial would be caught up in Canada's already existing hate speech laws. My concern is the precedent in banning specific speech on a specific topic. I would prefer if it was kept more generic. Your point about speech not being violence is spot on. However, explicitly racist hate speech is a problem in Canada. In many cases, holocaust denial leads directly into calls for violence against Jews. IMHO, I think the problem is more the violence against Jews (and general antisemitism), rather than the holocaust denial itself.
  10. I've worked with some people who worked at some of Musk's companies. He is a complete asshole to work for.
  11. Despite higher hospitalization and case loads, there is no evidence that the ICUs in Ontario are yet close to being overwhelmed. CMOH said earlier today that current modelling shows that present modelling suggests ICU usage might rise to about 600 people at the peak of this wave -- but that this wouldn't alter their plans. Reiterated that people should get vaccinated -- up to 3rd dose for everyone eligible, 4th dose for 60+ and immunocompromised. Reiterated plans to make Paxlovid easily accessible for the vulnerable.
  12. A specific example of a culture war could be: A governor raises a ridiculous unnecessary law. One group of people decide to use a hyperbolic nickname that is not a good faith description of the law. One portion of the media decide to pick up the hyperbolic nickname, and refer to the law in that way. This will confuse many celebrities, who campaign on the belief that the law actually reflects said law. A group of employees will demand that their company, which has no interaction with the law, should come out against it. The company changes direction, and does. In response, another group of people will come up with an even more ridiculous hyperbolic name for the law, which is even worse faith than the original group. People will argue about said law in the media and social media, as if any of the entire process is in good faith.
  13. Which are the parts that are participating in the present culture war? As an outsider, it seems to be coming from the South (on the right) and the North East and West Coast (on the left). All I know, the place I lived (SE Michigan) was not participating in this batshit-insane culture war that is being perpetuated in US media and social media.
  14. Michigan is one of the most politically moderate places in the US -- particularly Southeastern Michigan. I didn't live in the UP, so I can't talk to whether that was batshit crazy. What do you think the sane part of the US is?
  15. At some point April Fool's transformed from a day where you try to ACTUALLY trick someone (i.e. where you actually try to be clever, and take advantage of someone's gullibility), to a day where people post the stupidest thing they can think of.
  16. For those not familiar with the Canadian parliamentary system, the Senate is NOT democratically elected. It's a holdover from a bygone era, that probably deserves to be abolished.
