We should just hire a junk scientist to make a bullshit study showing that raw milk gives kids autism and then they’ll have no idea what to do. -

Even if I hadn’t just played two of the best over the shoulder action horror games of all time back to back immediately before starting Callisto, I don’t think it would have made much of a difference. Callisto feels like someone took the basic framework of Dead Space and managed to tweak everything in just the wrong way. Oh, you want a clever combat system instead of just bullet sponge enemies? Yeah, we can do that! How does just waggling the joystick left and right endlessly sound? The idea of having melee be a significant part of the combat and having a way to dodge incoming attacks is good and makes sense. The solution being “just hold left then right endlessly until victory” does not. The boss enemies are bullet sponges, so you will spend minutes of time ducking and weaving without any danger at all because you will ALWAYS dodge as long as you alternate between left and right. There are long stretches of the game dedicated to slowly crawling through vents or shimmying through cracks which feel half like they’re to hide loads and half like they’re padding a short game. The world is littered with walls of spikes for you to throw enemies into which would be more satisfying if the tool you used to do it didn’t suck and if it didn’t feel like an apology for the combat. “Look, we know you’re getting tired of dodging, just toss this guy into spikes and we can both move on.” It’s not a terrible game or even a bad one, just a thoroughly mediocre one. It was free through PS+ and for that it was fine but if I had paid $70 for it I’d have been be very unhappy. As a side note, this game was originally going to be in the PUBG universe which is wild, and I don’t know if it’s a bad coincidence or not, but the ending of the game can be sort of loosely connected tied to PUBG still. I don’t know if they kept the original idea but scrapped the direct reference or if it was just a fairly standard trope that echos. -

Honestly the only part of the remake that I’d say is worse is they try to redo the twist ending by changing it, and it’s somehow even less plausible than the original twist. That said, the original reveal was equally stupid so it’s just swapping one bad twist for a different one. I haven’t replayed Dead Space as many times as I have RE4, so outside of some really obvious differences it’s harder to tell what was totally changed and what was left more or less intact. It’s a very faithful remake and I would go back to play this one over the original before I would go back and play the remake of RE4 over the original. Hopefully they’ll give Dead Space 2 this treatment as well. That said, playing this made me look up the bigger picture lore on the markers and yeesh. -

The fact that some people have bad reactions to vaccines is functionally meaningless. That isn’t to downplay their own personal consequences, but on a large scale they should be ignored. There are a handful of car accidents where an airbag or seatbelt actually makes things worse, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be used all the time.
