Also, the more I revisit Korn as I get back into music again, the more I realize they kind of pioneered a lot of what heavy music is these days. Drop tuning and/or 7 string guitars? Korn did it (Black Sabbath played in drop tuning, as well, but not for the same effect, they played it more for "dark" vibes whereas Korn did it for "FUCK YOUR FACE" vibes, plus they wanted their guitars to mimic 808 sounds from rap beats). Too many years of reaching upwards to hit crash cymbals, I kind of explode if they're below my shoulders. I do love how jinjer switches time signatures but they aren't obnoxious about it. They actually make it feel like a natural part of the song when they flip between 6/8 and 7/8. They do that in a lot of songs. They even sometimes play in 8/8, which is like 4/4 but more pretentious. But basically Jinjer and Tool are the only bands I can think of that get all fucky with their time signatures and it doesn't come off as "look how good at music we are," it just naturally flows with the music. Loved the retro doom thing they did with the first album, complete with the retro equipment to fully get the retro sound, Firewood was still great if a bit peppier than the first album (forget if they ditched the retro equipment before or after Firewood), The Alchemist got very far away from doom but the whole jazzy thing in the second half of the album especially felt like a logical progression for them, and the first half was still kinda-sorta that "upbeat groovy doom" thing they had started doing in Firewood...and then it seems like they went generic hard rock after that. The Alchemist lived in my car's CD player my senior year of college, I'm pretty sure my friends were sick of it by the end of the year but I just couldn't get enough of the album. I actually just checked out their, apparently several, albums after The Alchemist the other week. I'm not sure why I had never heard them or fell off but yeah, they were surprisingly modern and somewhat uninteresting sounding. I think the first is my favorite for nostalgia reasons. Nobody was really doing that when they released that album and I worked at a small record label at the time...we wore that thing out if there's such a thing with a CD. I think I saw them live right after The Alchemist came out, or was about to come out?
