Georgia’s Department of Public Health raided a medical clinic and took away their COVID-19 vaccines after they found out the clinic was giving the vaccine to teachers.

The Medical Center of Elberton will not receive any shipments of the vaccine until July 29 for breaking protocol and vaccinating teachers. 

 

“DPH took the action after learning the provider had been vaccinating individuals in the Elbert County School District who were outside of the current Phase 1A+ eligible population,” the department said in a statement on Monday. 

 

Health officials took 470 shots of the vaccine and only left enough to give the second shot to those who already had their first shot with the clinic. 

 

However, the medical center only moved on to vaccinating teachers because it had already vaccinated all the health care professionals who wanted the vaccine in the community, according to employees.

This is something I really don't understand.  All of these politicians talk about opening up the schools and getting kids back in there because virtual learning isn't effective and that there's an increase in student suicides and all that.  That's fine, but then why does no one advocate for getting teachers vaccinated first?

Pretty much, the campaign on education to get the votes but it is always one of the first things to get cuts even in good times. 

In my county they are basically giving it to anyone that wants it, as long as you live in the county of course. We are sitting at nearly 22% of our population that has gotten the first shot and 3% that have received both.

Because the relatively wealthier, white public wants schools open. The report of being able to open schools safely with social distancing and ventilation is insane. Schools are already overcrowded, and many have very little ventilation, including having windows that won't or can't open, to say nothing of lacking forced central air or heat. 

 

Two other points: one, the cdc study in 17 rural Wisconsin schools can't be used to justify opening urban or suburban schools by the cdc's own admission. Two, all of this reopening schools talk because of low transmission rates is based on low community transmission per the cdc, which we do not have anywhere, to say nothing of the ability of schools to actually ventilate and social distance.

I'm honestly mixed on this. On one hand I get teachers want it and having them high on the priority list makes strategic sense. At the same time it feels like another slap in the face to people with disabilities who've had to undergo the the hardest quarantine while living in constant fear that their caregiver is going to give them COVID (big up tick in the last month of people with SMA on Facebook Groups getting COVID, all mild thankfully). In North Carolina people with disabilities went from 1a down to priority 4, then an NC county decided to start dosing prisoners and teachers. It just adds to the feeling this is never going to end because your slot keeps slipping. The result is a lot of people with disabilities are now saying screw it and jumping the line one way or another.
