  1. I saw that, it was very helpful! Just curious if there are other impressions. I don't understand how this flew so far under the radar.
  2. Checking in three years later... Did anyone else play this? I see it's on sale during Days of Play, and I'm desperately looking for something for my new PS5, which seems so far like a bit of a worthless purchase.
  3. Elden Ring is Dark Souls again. TOTK is the world's best video game developer arguably at their peak.
  4. "Bungie raised questions about the The Last of Us multiplayer project’s ability to keep players engaged for a long period of time, which led to the reassessment." Video games are in full nightmare mode.
  5. Modern game development is in a really precarious place right now. The expectations are higher than they have ever been for video games given their huge market, while the costs and length of development necessary to meet those expectations in the AAA space grows and grows. And sadly it seems that even when the games do come, the bread has mostly been buttered by insidious monetization. COVID surely had a huge impact on lots of stuff in the pipeline for all of the major players, but at this point I would have expected to see a much more diverse and interesting lineup of games than we've gotten. At least Alan Wake II looks great.
  6. I will always remember D1P user Hiawa (not certain of the spelling) having a meltdown after the conference and looking for reassurances about MS's strategy.
  7. I finished the: ...and one of the solutions to get a chest blew my mind. There was a small square in the middle of the gate, but you can't jump high enough to climb through. I eventually: I'm pretty sure that solution isn't the most obvious, and I maybe missed a button somewhere, but it was so satisfying to come up with an idea that worked like that. I'm finding this to be the case with almost any obstacle. The game is constantly encouraging lateral thinking in a way that almost nothing has from my experience. It's remarkable how these systems work together.
  8. This really feels like a full realization of what Breath of the Wild was going for. I can't fathom how they balanced the collision of all these emergent systems with the very, very well crafted main quest. I'm not super far into the game, but I've had more emergent scenarios that created awesome stories than I have in any other game I can remember. I've also been following the primary quest, and it feels much more like a classic Zelda title in certain sections than BotW did. I honestly don't know how any fan of these games could complain at this point. This is a an absolutely peerless video game that I hope (but cynically assume will not) be a turning point in the evolution of overall game design, at least for open worlds. It feels to me so far like the kind of push that games haven't had in years and years.
  9. Incredible game so far. Getting right around 900p, and 30fps playing on my Tegra X1-based Nintendo Switch video game console. I haven't remapped the controls in any way.
  10. The hyperbole is on point. BotW absolutely embarrassed modern games to a degree that I hadn't experienced when it released. Sounds like this will do the same.
  11. The game will be absolutely tremendous. Nintendo is the only developer who continually surprises me with their games, and reminds me why I love to play in the first place. Their innovation and forward thinking in game design cannot be topped.
  12. It's become a console war flashpoint, so it likely won't ever be appropriately evaluated. Your early takeaway seems pretty consistent with any of the remotely competent critical sources that have covered this game (generally those that don't give out numerical scores).
  13. Jim Ryan is almost certainly not playing many video games or driving their quality in any individual way. Phil Spencer seems to enjoy playing games but is also very unlikely to be involved with every release to the extent that many here are suggesting. There seems to be a misunderstanding of how organizations this large function at a basic level here.
  14. Very strange to me that there was supposedly so much pinned to the success of a game that, before release, didn't seem to impress all that much. To me this just looked like another generic co-op looter shooter. Is it disappointing coming from Arkane given their past output? Definitely. Was it expected to review extremely well and represent the dawn of a new Xbox golden age? It was? What the fuck? The disconnect between how this game has been received and what it actually is and was advertised to be, doesn't make sense to me. It certainly seems like it wasn't ready, but neither was Jedi Survivor, or a number of 2023 games. But in those games the rays were traced I guess?
  15. Just a reminder that games criticism is broken beyond repair and now just exists as hollow marketing. Most critics don't have the analytical or creative faculties to properly assess video games across all of their dimensions. And the modern gaming audience likewise doesn't have the ability to read or think about games beyond the score they're given (7, 8, or 9). This game has always looked very bad and very disappointing to me, but I also can't take any scores seriously for anything coming out given the state of reviewing games in 2023.
  16. "Fandom" of any sort requires strict obedience, and I've found that movie/comics/video game nerds are more than happy to oblige. The lack of independent thought is striking. Console wars stuff though seems like it was really perpetuated early on by younger people who could only own one system. But then it's just... stuck around. And it's pathetic.
  17. I've been considering getting a PS5 since they're so easy to find now. I sold my PS4 Pro a while back and am wanting to upgrade (and I really want to play Returnal). Really basic questions but I'm unsure about the following: - Can I just sign into my existing Playstation ID? - Can I download any and all PS4 games that I bought digitally? And is there still some confusion regarding versions of games with enhancements or not and which to download? - If I sign up for PS+, are some games downloadable or is streaming the only option? Is it just PS1/2/3 games that require streaming, or is it all of them? - I don't like Horizon or GoW, but is there anything else I missed from this extremely slim generation that I should look into that's PS5 only? - Is HDR a bit borked like I've read or is that more of a game-by-game issue? I've read about lots of supposed HDR issues, but wasn't sure if that was a system level thing or not. I've been pretty spoiled with Xbox/Dolby Vision/Auto-HDR stuff up until now and haven't needed to configure anything specifically. Thank you!
  18. Remedy rank: Max Payne 2 > Alan Wake + American Nightmare > Control > Max Payne > Quantum Break.
  19. Of all modern games to single out as "soulless", an immaculately crafted remake of one of the best and most transcendent video games ever is baffling. It's also fucking stupid. In the landscape of modern "AAA" games, this is one of the few that I would say has any soul at all.
  20. I have three Dreamcasts and a bunch of peripherals and games. It's my favorite video game console and I consider JSR my most seminal videogame experience. I would kill for updates to any and all Sega games from that era. But the spirit of those games - the concentrated creative and artistic explosion and lack of regard for broad commercial appeal - is long dead. Sega went out on a creative high that likely will never be matched in the industry, and today they are the same company in name only. These being "super games" can only mean that they will be either mobile or service based experiences, if they exist at all. I can't think of anything less true to the spirit of Jet Set Radio than for it to be launched as a conformist, blatantly commercial product filled with the industry's worst tendencies.
