  1. Would it be ok to play this one without having played the previous two games? Lush, lovingly constructed single-player games are really all I want to play these days, but I don't have time to play the first two to catch up on the story.
  2. I don't love Polygon reviews, but their two recent features about Resident Evil 2 and the 90's Nintendo Power console design contest were excellent, and generally leagues more interesting than other comparable video game journalism.
  3. As much as I love the McQuarrie films, and I genuinely think that 5 & 6 are the best in the series, I hope that they hand directorial duties over to somebody new.
  4. In for everything except the size of the map. The size of the map runs inverse to the amount of fun I have in open-world games. Except for Breath of the Wild, but that's because Nintendo is on their own level generally.
  5. I didn't enjoy the first Evil Within, but the second one is one of my favorite games from the past few years. I am nearing the end of Leon's A scenario in RE 2, and I can confidently say that this is some of the most fun I've had in a game this generation. I'm so excited to see what the plan is moving forward, and I'm completely on board with whatever direction they decide to go (continuing with remakes or progressing to 8 and beyond).
  6. What counts as a critical hit? Just when the reticle closes in? I feel like I've gotten more than two of those into a leg and not had it come off, but maybe I'm not hitting a weak spot (knee?).
  7. Got about three hours in last night. So far I'm LOVING this game. It perfectly combines the atmosphere and general structure of the early games with all of the modern gameplay touches found in Resident Evil 4 and on. The graphics, setting, and sound design in particular are incredible; the last game I played that sounded this good was Hellblade, where the sound was basically the primary mechanic. I'm excited to play through it again and swap the original soundtrack, but the minimal ambience of the OST is appropriate and unnerving. Probably too early to say, but so far this is exactly what I've always wanted from a Resident Evil game. It seems to combine all of the best elements from across the entire series into a tight, exceptionally designed horror experience. Bravo Capcom.
  8. This is fascinating. I don't recall ever having seen such an honest video announcement from Nintendo; is there precedence for this?
  9. In order of excitement: Resident Evil 2 Control Sayonara Wild Hearts Shenmue 3 Luigi's Mansion 3 Doom Yoshi Kirby What other Nintendo games am I missing for this year?
  10. I bought Dead Cells a little while back after the price dropped to $25 (I believe it released at $40). I've been oscillating between thinking it's incredible and thinking that it's too difficult and repetitive. The way that it forces you to play differently almost every single time by virtue of the randomized weapon drops is really cool, and I have yet to find an easily exploitable strategy. You constantly have to make decisions about which of three main stats to increase, and which weapons will complement others. However, permadeath means that you're constantly retreading the same (randomized) areas over and over again, and even when you're doing well, you'll run into an enemy or boss whose patterns take several tries to learn, resulting in death and a restart. Add to that the length of time that it takes to purchase permanent upgrades and it can be a pretty grindy and frustrating experience. I may just not be skilled enough to really break through and have the game click, hence my experience, but I have enjoyed my time with it much more than with similar recent 2D action platform games (Hollow Knight in particular).
  11. While it's not similar to the games that you mentioned, I highly recommend Into the Breach. It's a brilliantly designed, straightforward but extremely deep tactics/puzzle game similar to Advance Wars. It's probably the best $15 that I've spent on the Switch. I also really like Inside and Hyper Light Drifter, which are now both out on Switch (assuming you haven't played them on other systems) and should be around that price.
  12. My understanding is that once you fight/defeat Ganon, the only way to continue is to load your last save before the fight. There is no epilogue or anything that allows you to continue exploring once you've completed the game. I've been itching to play this again, as it is probably in my top 3 or 5 all-time game experiences. I've been thinking about getting the DLC to start a new play through in Master Mode, as well as mess around with all of the new challenges. Can anybody that has the DLC speak to its quality, and to whether or not it would enhance a second play through of the game?
  13. I hear you! 7 was indeed terrifying. I need to go back and try it with VR, which I hear makes it unbearably scary. Funny enough, I had a similar reaction when I initially played RE 4 on PS2. During the first section with the chainsaw guy, I was boarded up inside a nearby house, didn't hear him, and out of nowhere he attacked and decapitated me. It was the first time that I can remember that a video game gave me a visceral reaction. I had to put the game down for a few days after that until I gained the courage to come back to it.
  14. What's everyone's favorite RE game? 4 was the first one that I really got into, so I'd say that, but I also don't have much of an attachment to the older games. I played some of RE 2 on Dreamcast but never got very far.
  15. Very late to this, but my favorite games from last year were: 1. Hitman 2 2. Prey: Mooncrash 3. God of War 4. Into the Breach I got a PSVR recently and have been playing Astro Bot and Tetris Effect, both of which are unbelievably good.
  16. I'm sorry! I got rid of my Facebook account around the same time and sort of fell off of videogames for a while, so I wasn't around very much. I appreciate the effort though! I checked in around the holidays and was delighted to see the community active again. I forgot how much D1P meant to me, even though I don't post a lot, so I resolved to make myself another account.
  17. I'm more excited for this game than anything else this year. I thought the demo was incredible, and seemed to perfectly balance the tone and tension of the early games with the action focus of the later entries. I still need to try and beat the REmake that I have on PS4, but I keep getting stuck and not being able to solve the obtuse puzzles. I've had to look at a guide a few times, and I now finally have the dog whistle, which at least feels like progress. Reading through the early portion of the guide, there is so much stuff I missed; the game's design is equally engrossing and baffling to me.
