  1. Okay so the transition from the Stones to the theme from Raiders is *chef’s kiss* but I’m so over every goddamn trailer featuring a classic needle drop. I blame it all on the Guardians of the Galaxy.
  2. As a trans woman still living in Florida you better bet your ass that I’m going to exercise my state’s newly established right to cary a firearm without a permit.
  3. And one last thing @sblfilms, and this is important and I say it with all due respect, but maybe you're not in the position to be suggesting what trans people should or shouldn't be doing when it comes to combating hateful rhetoric. It's not your fight, and your lack of personal experience comes through clearly. I would never tell a person of color what the best strategy for calling out racism would be. In those situations I understand I lack the personal experience so I try to sit back and listen rather than lecture. You certainly don't have any issue with calling out a white user if you think they are wrong or ignorant on issues related to race, and I'm not afraid to tell you that you're straight up wrong when it comes to trans issues. You have a lot of learning to do. I hope you're willing to do the necessary self-reflection and learn how to be a better alley for a community that is under a lot of underserved attacks right now.
  4. But Netflix's stock took a hit during the Chapelle controversy. This is documented. And their subscriptions are down for the first time ever. I'm not saying this is the sole reason, but Netflix's brand has certainly taken a hit. And I think it's a good thing for these issues to have a light shown on them because don't consumers deserve to know if their subscription dollars are being spent to platform hateful rhetoric? And sometimes doing the right things means you aren't always successful. Unfortunately most people don't have the most education or evolved views on trans people. But education takes time and it takes patience. But just because it might not be successful doesn't mean you shouldn't speak out. The allegations against Louis CK didn't stop him from winning a Grammy, but does that mean we shouldn't be discussing his harassment of women? Hell, the discussion on him winning the Grammy probably generated a lot of listeners to the album. But I didn't see you arguing that it shouldn't be discussed. And to respond to something you said earlier, its disingenuous for you to pretend that Chapelle signed a new special BECAUSE of the controversy. He is one of the biggest comedians today, and his specials were doing gangbusters for Netflix even before he went too hard on the trans stuff. No, he got a new deal in spite of everything. But stuff like this, to borrow a phrase from you, has non-economic costs for Chapelle. His brand has taken a hit. His name has more negative connotations in comedic circles than it did a decade ago. It will likely tarnish his legacy if he's choosing this to be his late-career stance. It won't age well at all.
  5. I don't really care about your indifference to comedy. I just don't find transphobia to be something worth being flippant about.
  6. Actually came into this thread to mention Something Wild. Didn't see it until a couple years ago but it's already one of my favorite movies. He will be missed.
  7. If criticizing this special can only help its popularity then why did Netflix delay releasing it for months? Just because vitriolic rhetoric doesn't affect you personally doesn't mean it will go away if you simply ignore it. You have to address it head on, and work on educating the community around you so that this rhetoric won't have an affect. Unfortunately here in Florida and other conservative states it's illegal to teach children that transphobia is wrong, so I have to get a bit more... creative in how I chose to educate my community. But ignoring issues and not bringing awareness/education to them is only gonna make things worse.
  8. Yeah sadly it can be. Some comics don't really have the best social skills. But a comic with good social skills in an EXCELLENT conversationist.
  9. Okay. Just letting you know I have pride in what I do similarly in how I'm sure you have pride in what you do. But please don't group my art form in with a transphobe. I tried to even it out by sharing a set from a trans comic but you didn't seem interested.
  10. So here's the tea that I heard, and I was aware of this before the special even dropped. But apparently Netflix had been sitting on this for months because they were scared of releasing it shortly after Chapelle's special. But ultimately they cave-in and released it because they were scared of a right-wing backlash. Leading up to the release of the special a lot of prominent trans users on Twitter noticed that Gervais blocked them in advanced, even if they never actually interacted with him before. So he knew full well what was about the backlash he was about to experience. At this point, the backlash is really all he has going for him. Would anyone actually be talking about the special if it weren't for these jokes?
  11. Yeah the scenes in LA and NY certainly intimidate me. I'd like to move to a major city eventually to get more work but currently not feeling either city. Half the comics in Orlando were certainly the way you described. You could never have an actual conversation with another comic, it just felt like a continual contest of who can add the funniest line. And from my experience, those who do improv are much less competitive and better at being team players. I've recently started dating someone in improv, and I find his lack of ego to be very refreshing.
  12. What don't you care about it? A little bit of background in case you don't already know, I'm a trans woman comedian who is using my platform to shed light on important issues while also keeping my audiences entertained. So it's kinda weird for me to see an entire art form denigrated just because of some transphobe.
  13. It’s unfair to write off an entire art form because of one cishet bigot. Here’s a trans comic who I really enjoy. Unfortunately there’s the old guard like Gervais which gives standup a bad name but there are truly a bunch of younger comics who are working at making comedy a more inclusive and positive space. I’m actually performing at an all woman showcase next month! It’s getting better bit by bit.
  14. I’m not saying I haven’t met standups like that, but don’t you live in LA? A city like that is obviously gonna attract a certain type of comic. I found the standup scene in Orlando to be low key toxic but where I live currently I find the scene to be supper positive and supportive. Some of my favorite people are comics.
  15. Yeah but don’t you quietly agree with a lot of the stuff that Chapelle and Gervais believe in? I’m not gonna let you pat yourself on the back just because you silently look down on a marginalized group of people.
  16. He has said - Trans women shouldn’t be viewed as women - Has been critical of trans activists going after JK Rowling - That trans children are being pressured to take hormones I assure you I’m not making this up. As a trans person I’m seeing things that cis users here aren’t seeing, and I assure you he has bigoted views. It’s no surprise he has those beliefs while also talking to me like I’m an idiot. I’m just done with this. I experienced a very upsetting instance of transphobia in my personal life earlier this week and I just don’t have the patience to deal with it on here anymore. I’m not gonna read this thread because its too painful for me, but DMs will go to my email. But it is curious to reflexively defend a cis person rather than take a silenced minority (trans person) at their word.
  17. I am so upset and disappointed in this board, but particularly @sblfilms He knows I am autistic. He knows I am trans. I have heard him express anti trans positions: And he always talks to me like I’m an idiot. When I call him out on it he lashes back because he probably because he doesn’t like being when a trans woman speaks her mind. I am done with this board until I can be reassured that it will be less hostile towards me. This is my final word. Message me if you really care anymore. I get so much disrespect already as a trans comic in Florida so I’m not gonna deal with a on a message board to used to make me feel safe.
  18. This board is not friendly towards trans people. I am the only woman comic on here yet I keep getting talked down too. I’ve fucking had it with y’all. I need my cis allies to speak out against how Sbl films is talking down to a trans woman on here.
  19. I am so over being talked down by you. You have expressed transphobic ideals before in the past. Your mask is off because you are talking to me with such disrespect. The audacity of you.
  20. Okay, I understand where you are coming from. Sorry for misunderstanding. I just thought it was a weird angle of addressing that. The way I would word it personally is that it takes a lot of a strength to be a woman working in comedy. None of the accusers have brittle ass spirits. You gotta be tough to be putting yourself out there in this comedy boy’s club. Ask any other female comedian and they’ll back me up.
  21. It was easy to interpret that he was conceding that maybe some women were like that. He shouldn't be doing that. Period. And please watch your tone. How is it "clearly" if I misunderstood? Unless you're implying that I must be stupid for not understanding something that is so "clear".
  22. Big yikes. Maybe we should be talking about victims in a more respectful manner here. Attitudes like this are why women are afraid to speak out.
