NBC shared this 1981 interview with Bernie Sanders by Phil Donahue. It started with a question that people were asking, "My goodness, how could [electing a socialist] happen in good old conservative Vermont. How do you respond?" One of the most fascinating things for me is seeing how states change and how their voting patterns change. New Jersey and Vermont going for Bill Clinton was huge in 1992. Vermont voted Republican over FDR four times despite his expansive use of government for programs such as Social Security. While it was not the same conservatism as something like the Deep South, it's still interesting to read about.

BoTh SiDeS You called yourself a centrist. Now you say there's no center. At least we're making progress because you are not center. A major party with your ideology (which thinks Gabbard was developing a centrist platform lol) would be BoTh SiDeD even more because it's really terrible and doesn't make sense. There's nothing magical about third parties. They suck. Third parties debate in many smaller races and never make traction because nobody actually likes them.

Uh huh. You said I believe in restricted free speech. That runs contrary to understanding that you don't have a right to a megaphone. You think they should be untouched and allowed to amplify on a private platform. That came from you. If you truly believe they should be broken up, that would put you in the "far left" and maybe you should listen to them more instead of "bOtH sIdEs." The far left is always called extreme until everyone ends up agreeing with them anyway. Moderate Democrats thought voting for the Iraq War with a frown on their faces would make then seem as patriotic as Republicans. Now you're just an idiot if you thought it was a good idea lol.
