Facebook reaches $5 billion settlement with FTC for privacy violations

Facebook to be slapped with $5 billion fine for privacy lapses, says WSJ

Quote

The fine represents the largest ever imposed by the FTC against a tech company. Previously, the agency’s largest fine against a tech company came in 2012 when Google agreed to pay a $22.5 million penalty due to its privacy practices. The fine would represent approximately 9% of Facebook’s 2018 revenues.

In its most recent quarterly earnings report, ... $3 billion represented about 6 percent of the cash and marketable securities Facebook had on hand.

I just hope congress doesn't decide that this is enough, and we can start to put some decent privacy legislation in place, rather than just fining Facebook or Google whenever they do get caught doing something bad.

Why do that when they can just get a free few billion dollars every so often
