Salt Lake City named preferred host for 2034 Winter Olympics

The International Olympic Committee voted to name Salt Lake City the preferred host of the 2034 Winter Olympics and Paralympics on Wednesday.

IOC officials seem to like the newer and well-maintained sport venues, public support, and minimum required capital investments.

Not sure if they're taking into account that the source of a lot of our snow (the city's namesake) will likely be dried up by then.

Lack of snow wasn't a problem for the Sochi games:

Organizers have hustled to transform a hub for beach holidays into a snow-filled athletic venue

Or the Beijing games:

I argue that the Olympics should be permanently placed in one location.  Oslo for the Winter Games and Athens for the Summer Games.  The entire process for determining who will be the next host city is incredibly corrupt and costs local taxpayers an extreme amount of money if that city is chosen.

Probably a good idea but I'm not passionate about arguing for or against it. I didn't live in SLC during the 2002 Olympics but I came to visit during the time. It was a really great atmosphere tbh.

It can be okay for the host city if they were the only city to be. That's how Los Angeles made money on the 1984 Olympics and I think we were also the only bid for 2028.

Olympics should be these events:

  • Get from point A to point B on land the fastest, using body
  • Get from point A to point B in water the fastest, using body
  • Go furthest on land in set time, using body
  • Go furthest in water in set time, using body
  • Throw thing furthest, using body
  • Jump highest, using body
  • Jump furthest, using body

Maybe there are more...but 90% of events are absolute fluff. "The contestants run from this point to this point, but can't have both feet leave the ground at the same time. Then they pick up a gun and ride a hog for a while, then they hand the hog to a teammate, who carries it to the finish line. The quadrathlon!"

Sounds like someone is still salty that they haven't recognized Karen Cockburn as the best Canadian Olympian of all time yet.

I immediately petition we make this an Olympic sport.

"Largest volume of performance enhancing drugs you can inject in X minutes" would be a good one too.
