Commissar SFLUFAN
Sudan in chaos as military rivals face off in power struggle WWW.REUTERS.COM A prolonged confrontation between the RSF paramilitary group and the army could plunge Sudan into widespread conflict and could derail efforts to move toward elections. Quote Sudan's army launched air strikes on a rival paramilitary force's base near the capital in a bid to reassert control over the chaotic country on Sunday after a power struggle erupted into clashes that killed 56 civilians and dozens of fighters. The fighting broke out on Saturday between army units loyal to General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. It was the first such outbreak since both joined forces to oust president Omar Hassan al-Bashir in 2019. Quote At the end of a day of heavy fighting, the army struck a base belonging to the RSF in the city of Omdurman, which adjoins the capital Khartoum, witnesses said late on Saturday. Both the military and the RSF claimed they had control of Sudan's airport and other key installations in Khartoum, where fighting raged overnight. Quote The Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors reported at least 56 civilians had been killed and 595 people, including combatants, had been wounded since the fighting erupted. Around half of the civilians who were killed died in provinces outside Khartoum, it said. Scores of military personnel were also killed, the doctors' committee said, without giving a specific number due to a lack of first hand information from hospitals where those casualties were taken. Quote U.S. special operations forces carried out a precarious evacuation of the American embassy in warring Sudan on Sunday, sweeping in and out of the capital, Khartoum, with helicopters on the ground for less than an hour. No shots were fired and no major casualties were reported. With the last U.S. employee of the embassy out, Washington shuttered the U.S. mission in Khartoum indefinitely. Left behind were thousands of private American citizens remaining in the east African country. U.S. officials said it would be too dangerous to carry out a broader evacuation mission. Battles between two rival Sudanese commanders entered their ninth day Sunday, forcing continued closing of the main international airport and leaving roads out of the country in control of armed men. Fighting has killed more than 400 people. Sudan violence: UK diplomats evacuated from Khartoum WWW.BBC.COM Hundreds of people have died after fierce fighting erupted last week between two opposing forces. Quote British diplomats and their families have been evacuated from Sudan in a "complex and rapid" operation, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed. Mr Sunak said work was continuing to ensure the safety of British nationals who remain in Sudan. The evacuees were taken to an airfield outside of Khartoum overnight to fly out of the country, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told the BBC. Exclusive: Evidence emerges of Russia's Wagner arming militia leader battling Sudan's army | CNN WWW.CNN.COM The Russian mercenary group Wagner has been supplying Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) with missiles to aid their fight against the country's army, Sudanese and regional diplomatic sources have told CNN. Quote The Russian mercenary group Wagner has been supplying Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces with missiles to aid their fight against the country’s army, Sudanese and regional diplomatic sources have told CNN. The sources said the surface-to-air missiles have significantly buttressed RSF paramilitary fighters and their leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo as he battles for power with Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s military ruler and the head of its armed forces. In bordering Libya, where a Wagner-backed rogue general, Khalifa Haftar, controls swathes of land, satellite imagery supports these claims, showing an unusual uptick in activity on Wagner bases. Commissar SFLUFAN
Report from a resident of a city just cross the Nile River from Khartoum who indicates that the RSF appears to control most of the capital city: Sudan crisis: Fighter jets are roaring over my home in Omdurman WWW.BBC.COM Thousands of people have left Sudan's capital but the situation is getting worse for those left behind. Quote With temperatures soaring to more than 40C at this time of the year, I normally sleep outside in my garden, but I am too scared to do that now, as fighter jets roar over my home in Sudan's Omdurman city - despite the latest ceasefire. I live with my mother and siblings in the centre of Omdurman, just over the River Nile from the capital, Khartoum. The fighter jets are a constant reminder that Sudan is now in a state of war. I cannot get used to their terrifying sound. The fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is all around us - to our north, south, east and west. It came close to our home on Monday afternoon, when a bullet ripped through the roof of my neighbour's house, hitting her leg while she was asleep. Fortunately, she was not seriously wounded. We heard loud noises - boom, boom, boom - a short while earlier. We think it was anti-artillery fire, but are not sure. We hid in our homes, as it is too dangerous to even look out of our windows. From morning to evening, ceasefire or no ceasefire, fighter jets fly past our neighbourhood, coming from the same military airport from where foreign nationals have been evacuated, and heading towards Khartoum to strike at positions of the RSF. From all the reports I have received, most of Khartoum is controlled by RSF fighters, with hardly any army soldiers - or police officers - on the streets.
Commissar SFLUFAN
Perhaps for not much longer though: From Al Jazeera: Quote The Sudanese army has escalated its air force activities in Khartoum and Khartoum Bahri, political analyst Alhindi Ezzedine has told Al Jazeera, in what looks like a final push for victory. “It seems that the army is heading to a decisive victory in the next couple of days. After that, the army might access negotiations,” Ezzedine said. “The RSF are now in retreat, they are in a state of defeat. They cannot fight an army with a hundred-year history,” he added. Of course, resorting to airstirkes in a heavily civilian populated area is a testament to the Sudanese military's inability to defeat the RSF on the ground: Also from Al Jazeera: Quote Journalist and political analyst Albasha Tbaiq has told Al Jazeera from Khartoum that people were “surprised today with heavy airstrikes in many locations in the state of Khartoum. “According to the information that I’ve received and what I see in front of me, the airstrikes have harmed civilians more than they have harmed the RSF, because they have been random airstrikes,” he said. “This is a sign of the army’s failure; since they couldn’t secure a victory on the ground, they have resorted to intensifying airstrikes.”

Exclusive: Ukraine's special services 'likely' behind strikes on Wagner-backed forces in Sudan, a Ukrainian military source says | CNN EDITION.CNN.COM Speaking to CNN, a Ukrainian military source described the operation as the work of a “non-Sudanese military.” Pressed on whether Kyiv was behind the attacks, the source would only say that “Ukrainian special services were likely responsible.” Quote Ukrainian special services were likely behind a series of drone strikes and a ground operation directed against a Wagner-backed militia near Sudan’s capital, a CNN investigation has found, raising the prospect that the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has spread far from the frontlines. Speaking to CNN, a Ukrainian military source described the operation as the work of a “non-Sudanese military.” Pressed on whether Kyiv was behind the attacks, the source would only say that “Ukrainian special services were likely responsible.” The operation involved a series of attacks on the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is believed to be receiving assistance from Wagner, the Russian mercenary group, in its fight against the Sudanese army for control of the country. CNN was unable to independently confirm Ukraine’s involvement in the series of strikes. But video footage obtained by CNN revealed the hallmarks of Ukrainian-style drone attacks.
