I've resigned myself to not being able to get a PS5/Series X until we're far into this generation.. . .unless I bite the bullet and pay way above retail.

Pandemic game delays aside, this generation so far is aggressively boring and uninteresting.  If you have a PS4 or Xbox One, I wouldn't bother getting one of these new machines for several years.

Being able to play my PS4 and Xbone library at their best performance level is worth the price of admission

Yup. I can't go back to playing on my One X. A friend of mine saw how much faster everything loads and how Quick Resume works and wants to upgrade just for that let alone the performance differences.

Seriously, it doesn’t matter if most of the games are still on the old consoles because you’d have to play them on the old consoles and that sounds dreadful already.

I saw that playing Sackboy online. I knew someone was playing on PS4 when there was loading to get into a level.

 

I mean, if that's all you have, you're getting a very fun experience, but it was a seamless, lovely experience on PS5. And that's not even getting into Demon's Souls Remake which really takes advantage of the lack of loading to make traveling between worlds really feel like you're going through a warp, plus Ratchet's instant dimensional warps and Returnal which allows you to jump right back into the action once you inevitably die.
