The different stages have different things to find that unlock features you'll need to progress. There's no great reason not to get those early to help focus on what the game's progression ends up being since you can always revisit stuff later.

This is true at the same time that increased access to media and better communication tools make it much easier to be aware of the people for whom today might be better than yesterday but still not great.
