  1. In some areas, mostly in the form of academia (Duke, UNC), Research institutions, and medical. Raleigh could absorb the effects pretty well in terms of housing. It's got expensive areas like Cary for the executive types, and cheaper areas for average employees (Durham). Plus there is ton of room to expand the city itself.
  2. The simple test is can the candidate kick Trump's ass in a debate, not out smart him, but make Trump look small. If they can find someone who can do that and come off as an authentic human, they'll win by chipping at the Trump cult and motivating the base to come out. Beto never hit Cruz directly in the debates despite multiple opportunities, he's authentic but I don't see him as being able to make Trump bleed.
  3. At what point do we acknowledge federalism is a bad idea and the States are bad at basically everything?
  4. Constitutional Amendment: Declare money is not speech. Mandatory public financing of all elections. Political donations are limited per individual to 3x the Federal minimum wage and can only be given by those within the candidate's jurisdiction. Federalization of all elections under the FEC who's Commissioners are appointed by the President, confirmed by the Senate, and supervised by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Political parties get no recognition by State or Federal Governments. Parties wishing to use FEC resources (voter rolls, staff, equipment) for Primaries must allow the Primary to be open to all voters within the relevant jurisdiction. State and Federal political boundaries must align with city and county lines, and be are subject to FEC approval. Medicare for All: All Federal Health Insurance programs are now under Medicare. Medicare covers those over 55, veterans, active duty military, children, and people with disabilities. Those on Medicare can opt for private coverage subsidized by Medicare. Passage of the Disability Integration Act. Creation of the Disability Services Agency with no income or asset restrictions. Ban Employer based insurance, everyone not on Medicare must use the Federal Individual Market that use Medicare drug and service prices.
  5. Given that whether or not this is totally legal is unclear, can we add this is to the list of post Trump executive reforms?
  6. Whitaker doesn't need to be confirmed, he's the Acting right now. His power might be limited though. The Vacancy Act might not apply since Sessions wrote his letter in a way that he got fired.
  7. I watched the DOD DHS press conference: Posse Comitatus has not been waived, DoD will be in a supporting role not doing law enforcement. Units being deployed include Engineering, Command and Control, Medical, and Aviation. There are Military Police units but I'm guessing that's just security. They'll be armed but I'm guessing with very tight Rules of Engagement. Mattis isn't going to let this get out of hand. It's bullshit. Like putting the National Guard in airports after 9/11.
  8. NC Republicans have been pretty open about blaming Durham (code for black) for losing the Governor's Mansion and NC going blue in 08.
  9. I'll probably early vote tomorrow. My ballot is gross, no Senators are up and my House Rep Walter Jones is unopposed, State Senate and House are up though. I'm voting for State and Local stuff. Our dick head Sherrif is unopposed, at least I can vote against the County Commissioners, all Republican, for screwing up the Hurricane and ignoring the resulting housing crisis. Big thing is 5 bullshit worded Constitutional Amendments to further strip the Governor of power (mostly to own the libs for putting in a Democrat) and kill environmental laws.
  10. Republicans on my Facebook feed are blaming Hollywood for the massive housing crisis in Eastern NC "guess they don't think we deserve help since we voted for Trump". Houses are still being condemned left and right, no hotels within 2 hours, no storage units, and FEMA is pretty useless. Regarding Flood Insurance, you'd have to abandon everything east of Raleigh. Flood Insurance really doesn't kick in for the big homes, it's mostly for the poor here. Wind and Driving Rain are the policies that the big homes are using. The big homes are almost all high up on pilings so we don't really flood. My parents are thinking about dropping it. All you'd do is further hurt the poor here and they aren't ever leaving.
  11. Why are we discussing this 21 days before the midterm? Shit like this is how you lose working class white voters who voted for Obama then Trump. Everyone knows Trump is full of shit, including those voters that put Trump in office. Trump is like a Republican Governor in a deeply blue state, they typically only get there because the super majority state Democrats had some kind of corruption scandal and enough voters want to give the other party a try. You don't win back power by pointing out the Republican Governor is an asshole, they'll just point back to the scandal ("Hillary is worse!"). You win by fixing the issues that made you lose in the first place (in Pennsylvania Wisconsin and Michigan). Playing Trump's stupid games does nothing of value for the Democrats. Hardcore Trump voters don't care, swing Trump voters roll their eyes, and this does nothing to motivate the Left.
