  1. It’s Official, Canada Has Rejected The F/A-18 Super Hornet As Its Next Fighter WWW.THEDRIVE.COM The F-35 and Gripen will be left to duke it out after the surprise removal of the Boeing jet from the competition. F-35 and Gripen are now going head-to-head. On the one hand, the F-35 would fit us into the American ecosystem. On the other, Saab has guaranteed that huge amounts of the Gripen's systems/frames would be manufactured within Canada (boosting our industrial base). In the end I expect the F-35 to win, though who knows.
  2. Fascists Are Already Weaponizing Twitter's New 'Private Media' Rule GIZMODO.COM A new Twitter rule against sharing "personal media" without consent is predictably being gamed by the far right. Wow what a surprise
  3. It's very annoying seeing many people online parrot the false idea that viruses naturally mutate to be more contagious and less deadly. It can certainly happen, but there is no selective pressure in the case of COVID for it to happen. The only time there would be selective pressure for a virus to become less deadly is if it allowed it to be more fit for spread. This would mean the virus' existing severity would be causing hosts to die before spreading it. In the case of COVID, people are contagious long before they become severely ill (and in fact are slightly contagious before showing strong symptoms). It's certainly possible for a variant to mutate into less severity (and be more transmissible), but there is no natural pressure in that direction (nor is it inevitable). Heck, just look at Alpha, which was more contagious and apparently more deadly than the OG strain.
  4. Oh also he sent this email in 2020 because he hates everyone in the company: Mortgages, Fraud Claims And ‘Dumb Dolphins’: A Tangled Past Haunts Better.com CEO Vishal Garg WWW.FORBES.COM The $4 billion fintech startup is hurtling towards an IPO. But its volatile leader is fighting multiple lawsuits that could complicate his ambitions.
  5. Better.com CEO fires 900 employees over Zoom WWW.CNN.COM Better.com CEO Vishal Garg announced the mortgage company is laying off about 9% of its workforce on a Zoom webinar Wednesday abruptly informing the more than 900 employees on the call they were being terminated just before the holidays. Fired people working from home: Also fired their DEI committee (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion): Sounds like a great boss and a great company, best wishes for them in the future!
  6. Kevin Feige Confirms Daredevil Casting In The MCU And Fans Will Be Pumped | Cinemablend WWW.CINEMABLEND.COM The MCU found its Man Without Fear. There are rumours that he appears in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but nothing has been confirmed. I hope they use him again, he was the highlight of the Netflix Marvel shows and I'd love to see what he could do within the MCU.
  7. "Look how lazy these kids are. When I was their age there was bullying but I didn't let it phase me!"
  8. You just have to look at how few foreign press offices there are compared to 50 years ago. Now you have people like Lopez writing stories about countries they've never visited, instead of veteran reporters who have lived and worked in those places for a decade.
  9. To be fair, I think there was a path in the 90s to disarm and create a better future for eastern Europe/Russia...but most of what was needed never happened. Imagine if the west had 100% gone in on investing in Russia and rebuilding it after decades of neglect. Instead, it was basically just gloating and attempted economic exploitation...and now the same enemy has reappeared. Almost like the west learned nothing from WWI!
  10. Omicron's transmissibility seems to be in a totally different class, compared to Delta: Now, the hope obviously is that the vaccines still prove effective at preventing severe illness (or/and that the virus itself is less deadly).
  11. Russia planning massive military offensive against Ukraine involving 175,000 troops, U.S. intelligence warns - The Washington Post WWW.WASHINGTONPOST.COM Satellite imagery shows a buildup of Russian forces near Ukraine’s borders, as well as newly arrived tanks and artillery.
  12. Good thread, you should read the whole thing. But, the potentially hopeful part: tl;dr: We will likely (almost certainly) see the vaccines lose efficacy on preventing infection. However, boosters may help with that (due to sheer volume of antibody response), and t-cell response (which helps against severe illness) should likely remain strong.
  13. This will end with a minority, female member of the Democratic caucus being killed by a crazy person, and the DNC will start a big fundraiser in their honour.
  14. I would agree we need better "end game" goals, but at the same time I agree with most restrictions currently in place—they are clearly helping control spread, and removing them would result in greater spread.
  15. Omicron Variant Detected in at Least Six U.S. States WWW.WSJ.COM Confirmed cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus have been reported in Nebraska, California, New York, Minnesota, Colorado and Hawaii, and at least one instance was community spread.
  16. The vaccines have effectively protected our healthcare system from collapse due to the idiots out there.
