  1. Alzheimer’s and dementia account for about a third of all LTC claims payments. Not many ways to care for these people cheaply (unless you’re relying on familial labor which may or may not be eligible for claims payments)
  2. The craziest thing is that this 30k lives is a very, very small block and these issues of debt and underperforming actuarial assumptions are rampant throughout the industry and have been for YEARS.
  3. There are not many new LTC policies per se being issued (there is still some!) but the industry is largely moving to riders on life insurance policies that pull from the same pool of money.
  4. If there’s a gradual drop in users (the likeliest option if it just becomes basically 4chan) it gives time for an alternative to scale up
  5. Look at that time when it went from a downward trend to an upward trend huh strange coincidence
  6. Oh my god this is funny (also firing a lot of engineers lol goodbye twitter)
  7. The devil is in the details but what needs to remain on the device to one is a useful feature to another. There’s trade offs but the odds and amount of actual abuse to come from not having a warrant far exceed the alleged safety gained from not requiring it.
  8. The point is without the check on state power through the supposedly independent judiciary then these decision are in the realm of cops, it won’t be any other way because of the inherent nature of these requests. Not that the judiciary is *really* a functional check (these guys work in tandem) but that’s what we’ve got. Really basic 4th amendment shit here
  9. All data requests should require the sign off of a judge. If we’re not doing that there’s a good starting point for easy reform to say nothing of the human element that will need to be trained and secured.
  10. Nearly everything of any consequence that crosses the internet is encrypted for one, data on devices is encrypted, and storing data on user devices is just lol lmao
  11. If your business is data and you don’t know how all your data is being used, how good is your business after all?
  12. The interesting thing to add when you talk about 20+ year timescales is that there will be debt forgiveness at that point regardless for a significant proportion of the population because that is the law as written. But in the meantime a lot of people are in debt for years and years with no discernible benefit other than keeping tax rates marginally lower at the state and federal levels (especially at the state level)
