Yeah. It was pretty dumb and I'm glad they didn't bother revisiting that. -

This is one of the best reaction videos I have ever seen. None of us enjoyed the finale or were invested as much as this mom. -

When Star Wars got put on Disney+ yet another change was made to the Solo/Greedo scene. And THIS happened: -

How the Kingston coal ash spill unearthed a nuclear nightmare GRIST.ORG What happens when the fallout from the nation’s largest industrial disaster goes nuclear? This disaster happened a few years ago. Basically a coal ash pond broke its banks and spilled into a river. Big environmental disaster. But the subsequent cleanup was even worse. The company doing the cleanup refused to give their workers respiratory protection or jumpsuits. TVA covered up the things and did some bureaucratic maneuvering to avoid specific classifications that would mandate those safety features (and cost money). Over time, the workers that did the cleanup got sick and died. But they managed to win a class action lawsuit against the company managing the cleanup because of the refusal to provide safety equipment. Well, now it turns out that the cleanup activity unearthed real life, honest to God nuclear waste. And that was covered up (literally and figuratively) almost immediately. And the dredging work was stopped and transitioned to "well, let's let the sediment settle out on its own, taking the radioactive elements with it and hopefully not disturbing anything else buried here." And there's a lot of Chernobyl style justifications here too...

So after reading up a bit on some of the criticisms and the rebuttals, it seems to me that people are reading the initial essay by Nikole Hannah-Jones as a historical document. It is not solely that. Its intention is to reframe our understanding of the stories surrounding the history of slavery in the US. It is a work of journalism--a collection of essays. Nikole Hannah-Jones got flack for some of the claims made in her essay (mentioned above). Bret "Bedbug" Stephens dinged her on some of them. She responded that it's hyperbolic and not meant to be taken literally. Whatever. There's still some things that are just incorrect, but it doesn't change the overall thrust of the essays. The safest way to approach 1619 is as a jumping off point into finding out more about the history and to deconstruct what we think we know about it. That said, the anti-1619 project thing from the tweet that started all this is NOT intended to be a historical correction of the record put forth in the 1619 Project. It is propaganda intended to push back against this reframing and instead support the false Great America that did no wrong. I'd put money on it being part of the "Patriotic Education" push too.

But in general, it's worth it to read actual historians' criticisms. Like SFLU said, some of the criticisms are legitimate. Such as: (from the wiki on 1619) Overall, however, the project is good about orienting present American life as being impacted greatly by the institution of slavery. That's worth something. That's worth learning in school.

I will say this though--Star Wars is becoming very Marvel-like in how there are now infinite spinoffs. Make of that what you will. -

Holy shit that was awesome. I'll give it a bit to digest, but man that was some good TV. Remember, there's a little vignette after the credits. Be sure to watch it too because it was some fucking awesome hype. -
