  1. We knew it as ding dong ditching. I grew up in West Tennessee, which has a much higher black population than most Appalachian areas. HOWEVER... My grandmother kept a ball peen hammer in the side pocket of her car door to use on potential carjackers. (Were there carjackings or purse snatchers in my small hometown? No, not really.) She called the hammer her n-word knocker. When my mom or whoever would tell her she can't use that word, she'd just go "well, that's just what we call it!" It was just what some things were named. It was just the way things were. White supremacy!
  2. Understanding why the people are doing and seeing the downstream effects of what they're doing are different. The downstream effects are what's most important. Understanding why allows people to address the policy. Unfortunately, these type of people won't be swayed by any forms of addressing the policy. So it's all moot at the end of the day. And what led to this--what I explained was the root here for why the school board made their decision--literally IS white supremacy. bmbmbm is right in that the culture is steeped in anti-Semitism (though the people in the culture won't recognize it as such). The downstream effects are what perpetuate white supremacy. It isn't lazy. It's just that simple. We can't explain why white supremacy is wrong to the people perpetuating it. Understanding it doesn't help when the people perpetuating it don't even realize what they're doing. The way out of this is to have generational turnover.
  3. Is that a meme? Or is that real. Because if it's real in the 4th line, shouldn't the R be green? EDIT: I'm confident it's a meme.
  4. Racked up another two absolute bangers recently. In the Heat of the Night (1967) - 9/10 When Sidney Poitier died I knew I needed to finally watch this. It had been one of those monumental films in history that made an impact and it had been on my list. I just never got around to it. I'm very glad I watched it and I really enjoyed this film. Sidney Poitier was a fantastic actor andhe had a smoldering power in every scene to his performance. Rod Steiger as his foil was great as well. Some scenes were nothing short of shocking in how the movie portrayed the racial attitudes and expressions. As good as a film as this is, I think it probably goes beyond just being enjoyable and a great piece of art--it's important too. Part of what I enjoyed so much was the cinematography. The great Haskell Wexler changed the entire lighting thought process in order to appropriately light dark skin. Because of it, the film just LOOKS fantastic. And in doing so, I'm guessing that Wexler changed the course of cinematography then and there. Rashomon (1950) - 9/10 Continuing on with my trip through Kurosawa's best, I watched this one yesterday. I like the frame story and the depictions of the different testimonies from each point of view. I wasn't so into the Medium's story because I don't buy that nonsense but I can see the characters giving it equal (or more) weight. But the Medium's sequence was awesome. It was really creepy! Especially with her manic movements and the overdubbed/modulated voice she used. At the end, however, I kinda lost the intent behind the message. I will probably need to watch this one again. I was more invested in finding out WHAT happened than what it meant that all the stories were different. But once I got it, I drew parallels from the story told and the life we're all living in. Times are hard. People are looking out for themselves. They will do whatever they will and justify it however they can. Everyone has their truth, regardless of the facts. But outside of the selfish motivations we have in how we move through the world, we've got to maintain our humanity and act in service of others. One of Kurosawa's absolute best. I understand why it's spoken so highly of.
  5. I'll speak more to what sbl is saying. In short, you are correct. This does the work for the aims of the far right. But sbl is right that the conservative evangelical purity culture is the place where these people are starting from when they make these decisions. We don't have to give them the benefit of the doubt when we explain it this way--and we aren't doing that. Because they're accomplishing just what an openly far right board would have done. The people making these rules just aren't the types of strategic deep thinkers to be cunning about this. They're dumb and reactive to the most surface level bullshit like nudity and coarse language. It's why the overt far-right policymakers getting all the attention in politics isn't the only thing. There's a spotlight to put on the non-political conservative evangelical types and the morality police that seemingly don't have any political ideological root to their aims. Because the same outcomes are derived from it.
  6. I thought it was going to be chain mail, judging by the small rings. But yes, I can see Grogu becoming the only other Jedi Mandalorian since Tarre Viszla.
  7. I know McMinn County. None of them are Catholic. Nor are they smart enough to have done this to head off some secret fascist future policies. This is purely braindead moral policing about the weakest obscenities (nudity and language) possible.
  8. Had you not said that, I wouldn't have known what that meant. It's clear this admin is doing nothing more than virtue signaling against Russian aggression here. There will be no help for Ukraine. There will be no defense of Ukraine from places that aren't Ukraine. Here's a rundown of the Russian units poised for action: Russia's Gamble in Ukraine WWW.CSIS.ORG Download the Brief The Issue Russia is pursuing a dual approach in Ukraine, combining a major buildup of conventional forces with clandestine irregular activities. According to new CSIS analysis and There's quite a few Russian ground units angled pretty close to Kyiv, unfortunately.
  9. Yeah, that's a no brainer swap. I like that they did it. I kinda dig what they're doing with it because it's this souped up hot-rod style. The mondo-whatsit-accelerator they put on it looks like a supercharger
  10. Oh I just remembered! When Din reveals to the Armorer that he has removed his helmet he asks how he can atone for it. When she says he has to go to the pools in the mines under Mandalore all I could think of was Dave Chappelle as Prince saying "Why don't you go wash yourself in the waters of Lake Minetonka."
  11. I loved it. Story-wise is advanced the Mandalorian's storyline. And I loved seeing that.
  12. This dude has no awareness of real events. The Hill continues to print just whateverthefuck people send in. I bet *I* could get an op-ed posted in The Hill!
  13. Do you guys want to freebase some absolute bullshit? Invite Russia to join NATO THEHILL.COM It is 30 years after the end of the Cold War — high time to set aside distrust and start constructing a warm and enduring peace among once and future friends. lol LOL lmao
  14. Burson Cohn & Wolfe - Wikipedia EN.WIKIPEDIA.ORG Jesus Christ dude lmao BHOPAL?!?!
  15. All of this man-portable stuff is just a drop in the bucket for what Ukraine actually needs. It's significant, sure, but it isn't going to make any strategic difference in the event of a Russian invasion.
  16. No, actually. They're far LEFT. But they're an example of the horseshoe theory thing. They defend Assad in Syria by denying he committed chemical attacks. They are deferential to Russia in all manner of story when the US and Russia intersect (UK chemical attacks, Syria, Ukraine). They deny the Uyighur ethnic cleansing. Overall, they are anti-imperialist when it comes to the US, but take the diametrical opposite position, which is often pro-Russia or pro-China. Oh, and they have lately gone DEEP into anti-vax nonsense. Their founder, Max Blumenthal, was at that anti-vax rally in DC today. So basically, they're contrarian cranks that go so deep on an ideology they fly past reasonable conclusions and go straight to propaganda--much like Lopez.
