  1. At this point I'm waiting not just for more people to be vaccinated but for it to be at the point where the servers don't have to wear masks and faceshields, seems like it'd be super weird being in a restaurant right now.
  2. I'm not saying I think this shouldn't happen, but the problem with these state boycotts in response to shitty laws is that a lot of the financial impact winds up falling on people who oppose the shitty laws, decreasing their ability to help get the shitty laws repealed.
  3. Huh, I only remember it was a video codec, I had no idea about the DVD rental stuff.
  4. Uh no in every other country if you live abroad and have no income derived from your home country you just don't file.
  5. Like, this isn't theoretical. I know expats for whom it's a burden to comply and for whom it's going to become an even bigger burden once they retire and these are not people making $500k a year.
  6. The burden falls disproportionately on your average expat while the rich people already have an army of lawyers and accountants to hide their money.
  7. DOT halts Texas highway project in test of Biden’s promises on race - POLITICO WWW.POLITICO.COM The department’s use of civil rights laws has buoyed activists on the ground and surprised even seasoned regulators in Washington.
  8. Again, we're the only country that does this, every other country in the world seems to do just fine without this. And it's not no big deal, depending on the country it can be hard and expensive to find someone who can reconcile the taxes, and there can be plenty of issues with the other country counting something as tax-free while the US doesn't (retirement plans for example).
  9. Meanwhile, new coronavirus variants continue to pop up throughout California. The Brazilian variant, which appears to be more infectious and to reduce the effectiveness of some antibody treatments, showed up last week in San Diego and the Bay Area for the first time. The state Department of Public Health is tracking five "known variants of concern" and three "known variants of interest," which together account for more than 9,000 cases statewide. https://laist.com/2021/04/01/is_a_fourth_coronavirus_wave_coming_for_california.php So basically we're screwed because we know people won't be extraordinarily careful. Why the fuck do we keep doing reopenings that depend on behavior we know the public will not exhibit?
  10. Reminder that we're the only country that does global taxation of its citizens and companies.
