Remarkableriots
'I have never seen this before': Woman shows gas station refrigerators requiring ID to open to get alcohol WWW.DAILYDOT.COM In a TikTok, a woman shows a machine checking for identification connected to gas station store freezers that hold alcohol. I would have loved this at my previous job.
Fizzzzle
There's a corner store by me where beer coolers are always locked - you have to give your ID to the guy at the counter and he gives you a key. Makes sense, but what sucks is that means only one person can shop for beer at a time.
TheShader
And yet we'll never get the proper implementation of this technology which is for alcohol vending machines and/or self serve fridges. If I have to go through this much trouble just to still have to pay at the counter, then I'm heading to the gas station down the street that doesn't have this.

When I was in Japan almost 15 years ago, they had vending machines for cigarettes. You had to have a special card to use them called a "taspo" card, which you get from the government. I'm not sure why vending machines for beer were so much less common and/or they didn't have a similar system for it.
TwinIon
This kind of thing makes sense to me, but I'm not thrilled by the idea that you now have to trust in the data protection capabilities of you gas station. I'm pretty sure they're not supposed to store any of the info they gather with these, and they're certainly not allowed to use it for marketing or sell it to data brokers in CA (and a couple other states like NY and NJ I think), but I wouldn't expect either of those rules to be followed. With the rollout of Real ID, it sure is a shame that they didn't build in privacy protecting ways to interact with things like this. Sure would have been nice if a machine like this could verify your age without automatically giving it all your personal identifying information.
