Canada forges first agreements to begin national, subsidized childcare

Promised for a while and legislated within the last year federally, the plan is to give huge amounts of federal money to the provinces, who then using matching funds to provide cheap, easily-accessible childcare for all parents. The goal is $10/day for each child, which would be a 75%-90% reduction in most cities. A similar, provincial plan already exists in Quebec, and has been a huge success—more mothers re-entered the workforce, and their income taxes paid are higher than the cost of the program, meaning it has created wealth for the province and population.

 

In the past week, the first two provinces have signed on, BC and Nova Scotia:

For sure. Only complicating factor was the Nova Scotia election (it's very rare to have a privincial and federal election at the same time), but it sounds like that one will be called within a week, and will likely take place mid-late August. In that case, I'd expect Trudeau to call the federal election on the Sunday following the NS election, and make the campaign as short as possible, meaning a late September vote.
