Conservatives only "care" about whatever benefits them in the current moment. Its the same as them suddenly championiong free speech when they were being banned from social media for being bigoted assholes. When they have the power they censor anyone and everyone. In a sense we are indirectly fighting China and their ambitions specifically related to Taiwan and the China Seas by demonstrating the price they would pay. It would embolden China if the West appeases Putin yet again. Furthermore the current stability of the world is built on the superpowers not gobbling up small countries in an imperial conquest. If Russia is given Ukraine on a platter they will not stop there. Moldova will be next. Its good to sell it to the public as charity but it very much is strategic.
