The 3090 Ti was 5-8% faster than the non-Ti :p

Even OCing it typically only pushed the Ti 6-7% over stock performance, the non-Ti would typically gain 4-5% OCed.

AMD wasn’t the only one with a pointless refresh last gen. :p

It just feels too calculated this generation, especially considering they were going to call the 4070 Ti a 4080 and charge $900 for it. But then we all raised hell and they changed the name and lowered the price before release. Jokes on us, since they basically did it with all of the cards.

What? The only times the Ti/Super refreshes are a big uplift is if it’s replacing the current flagship (and even then it’s not always a big improvement), otherwise it typically just hits the “in between” for like a 10% uplift or so (ie: a 3070 Ti is in between a 3070 and a 3080) -> these are the same performance uplifts that AMD does on their refreshes.

AMD's 6000 refresh was very pointless, also their cards don't respond as well to overclocking which leads me to believe they would have had a much tougher time delivering their refreshed cards at their actual launch. Nvidia cards were power limited last gen, but if you got a card with a good PCB and massive cooling you can squeeze a lot out of it. The 3090 Ti is the de facto example. All the 3090 benchmarks you see will have the card running at 350W (same as the 3080) or maybe up to 380W, then they beefed up the 3090 Ti layout and gave it a standard of TDP 450W with an upto of 600W in the benchmarks.

AMD does the same thing, they just add a 50 to their numbering scheme instead of calling it “Super”. :p

They're a bit less egregious because their +50 cards are barely any better than the original cards. Nvidia usually offers a bigger uplift with Super and Ti cards. But this generation Nvidia was definitely trying to make up for their "mistake" of making the 3080 almost as fast as the 3090 for half the price at launch.

  4. Nvidia is now the master of bamboozling expectations.  I honestly believe these "refreshed" cards could have been offered at launch at the upcoming same performance at this same price and Nvidia would still have made bank.

Now they're going to get *some* praise for offering better value, after they brought about one of the worst value generations in the 80 and 70 class cards getting a steep price hike on 4000 launch, compared to previous generations. Just damn, does this make the OG 4080's price look even worse than it did.

It's also a damn shame AMD couldn't release a card substantially faster and cheaper than the 4080 to force some competition, but then again they probably would have priced it higher anyway.

Don't count on or hold your breath for more than two fast DDR5 sticks in your builds

TLDW:  2 sticks more stable and faster, 4 sticks either really slow (<5200 MHz) or really unstable.

When moving from 2 DIMMs to 4 DIMMs, the signal on each channel is split between the two sticks which requires the memory controller to work harder to communicate with the memory. It's such a bigger problem with DDR5 compared to previous generations simply because the insanely high clockspeeds already require impeccable signal integrity with just a single stick per channel. This is, along with the high speed requirements of PCIE 5.0, requires motherboards to be built better to reduce EMI and one big reason mobo prices have gone up so much. Now could future CPUs with better memory controllers help this? Sure, but I wouldn't count on it as it probably requires too much of a voltage bump to be worth it. For gaming just buy bigger sticks.

There's also advice about his experience on what memory speeds at each capacity you can expect current CPUs to run at. AMD's top end is currently 6000 MTs, up to 6400 MTs if you're really really lucky; Intel is 7200 MTs, up to 8000 MTs if you're really really lucky.

  6. I have recently seen Google notify me about a new feature that lets me carry over text conversations from other phones which are logged in with the same Google account (obviously). You could hope that feature got updated onto your old phone and that your new phone will connect to it. Otherwise you would have needed to back up the messages with some other service prior to it breaking.

Last option would be to buy a replacement screen. For budget phones I think the cost is around $30 for the screen itself; not sure how much screens on mid or high-end phones cost to replace. DIY is a pain in the ass, and could potentially break the phone further during disassembly, but it's doable with moderate equipment. Small screwdrivers, small prying objects, razor blade, and some heat to loosen up any glue should be all you need.

I refuse to break. They're making these ads obnoxious so that you give in and subscribe. It's super scummy.

There are phone apps you can download to get rid of ads on mobile at least.

Obnoxious... and scummy. I let my Premium run out and just got a sponsored video from Scientology. If I continue to get more bullshit like this, I will indeed pay to not see it.

  9. Aside from horrid performance and occasional glitches, it's a nice expansion of what they started in Fallen Order. As best as I can recall the gameplay/combat was not as tight as it was in FO, but the expansion to the moveset made up for it.  Still, for some reason I had harder time getting my dude to do exactly what I wanted - the most glaring example being when fighting a group of enemies I would go to force pull/push enemy grenades/rockets Cal would more often target a person instead and I'd get blown up. Only a couple of the boss fights were cheap and unintuitive; on the Vader fight I had him down to one hit on my first attempt and then proceeded to get rekt 10+ more times when he randomly decides to chain two or more unblockable attacks in a row. On the medium difficulty I also really felt like I should be doing more lightsaber damage, especially because the creature bosses were just HP sponges and were not nearly as engaging as the humanoid fights.

I rocked the Dual Wield + Crossguard stances for most of the game. Visually they were great, but the Dual Wield had a few quirks. It's definitley meant to be an aggressive assault on your enemy, but the skill upgrades to the basic combo attack didn't do much most of the time because a lot of the enemies would get knocked back out of range during the combo and I'd whiff the last two attacks. What a waste of a cool moveset. I also wish a few of the skill just happened faster, particularly the charged ones because of how easy it is for Cal to get staggered out of them. I switched to Double Bladed towards the end and it seemed just as effective at assaulting the grunts as Dual Wield.

    As for the story,

    Spoiler

I totally expected Bode to betray us from his very introduction, but I didn't expect it to happen so late into the game nor for him to be the final boss. The spy arc was pretty good and I enjoyed it because of the shades of Andor. I would have liked to see his insanity portrayed a bit more... because no character nor the story pointed out how creepy it would be for him and his daughter to basically be alone on an entire planet. But the bitch got what was coming to him after murdering a defenseless old man.

The Dagan Kera story was cinematically very cool, but his actual character arc and dialog were so generic I never bought into the parallels they were trying to draw between his and Cal's obsession with Tanalorr.

  10. Yeah I think the most likely thing they are doing is pumping Internet into your building through high speed Wifi, and then distributing that throughout the building with DSL. In this case you would need a compatible DSL modem, and then your ISP would need to register that modem to allow it access on their network. Is there an RJ11 port on the current router?

  11. RJ45 has twice as many wires as RJ11's four, and any Ethernet standard faster than 100 megabit uses all 8 wires while the standard for less than 100Mb only needs 4 wires. If your ISP is only using RJ11 with 4 wires and able to provide >100Mb to the router they provided you, then afaik they must be using some other tech (a version of DSL? proprietary?) in their equipment they gave you to achieve this.

  12. Another shit thing the EA games have in common is they force you to have the EA app installed and running. It's easily the buggiest and most annoying game launcher, which is a feat in a market with the Epic Games launcher.

My Jedi Survivor stutters were going alright until I started filling up the Koboh town with people and unlocked riding beasts. It's like twice as bad after doing that.

  13. External AC adapter is indeed required.

You can buy an external enclosure and then put any hard drive in it. I have a 500GB drive connectd to my WiiU and it holds almost all of the major games on it, but 1+TB would be recommended to fit just about every interesting/unique game.

Unless things have changed since I modded mine, I think original Wii games that were not in the eShop need to be on a separate hard drive.

Good so my cap would be roughly $3k for a new build.

Your budget for the "best" will depend entirely on what the best video card costs.  Currently the best costs $2k, and the next best is $1200. Previously the best was under $1500 (without the crypto tax), but you could get something almost as good for under $1k.

Who knows what the prices will be when you're ready to build. They will probably stay about the same, but there's a chance they go down a little bit and an equal chance they go up if the A.I. boom continues.

Not having BC is definitely one of the most baffling decisions a company has made with their hardware recently

PSVR1's fate was probably sealed when they decided to use PS3 pleasure devices for controllers.

  16. 3.1 is guaranteed to be newer and support your speeds, but definitely not necessary with your current plan.

3.0 you need to look at the specs to make sure you're not getting a crappy one. Generally more channels = better. There's also a specific chipset with problems; avoid ones with an Intel Puma processor.

I'd also suggest not going for an all-in-one solution. Better to have separate ones so you can upgrade them independently.
