Hyenas had a HUGE presence at the recent Gamescom and just completed a closed beta test that I'm assuming the feedback from was significantly less-than-positive.  The staff at Creative Assembly were informed of the cancellation this morning.

Notice regarding Implementation of Structural Reforms in the Consumer Area (Entertainment Contents Business) of SEGA SAMMY HOLDINGS INC. are described.

The Company will implement the following items regarding structural reform in our European bases which are determined at this time.

1) Cancelation of titles under development

In response to the lower profitability of the European region, we have reviewed the title portfolio of each development base in Europe and the resulting action will be to cancel “HYENAS” and some unannounced titles under development. Accordingly, we will implement a write-down of work-in-progress for titles under development.

A poster at ResetERA said that this cost him his job today:

I'm losing my job because of this today too. See you all on the other side.

"Corroborated" sources claim that this was Sega's highest-ever budgeted project.

And Hollywood director Neill Blomkamp reportedly provided story direction…

New alleged details on the development of Sega and Creative Assembly’s cancelled live service shooter Hyenas have been published, including claims that it was Sega’s biggest budget game ever before the company pulled the plug.

The Japanese publisher announced last week that it was cancelling the multiplayer shooter “and some unannounced titles under development” in Europe, following at least six years of development on the project.

Developer Creative Assembly has suggested the game was cancelled due to “ambitious” plans and high competition in the multiplayer shooter space.

However, a new video published by Total War YouTuber Volound – corroborated by VGC’s own sources – features claims from anonymous developers that a lack of direction, disruptive engine change, and overly-cautious design contributed to its downfall.

VGC has asked Sega for comment on this story.

As someone who signed an NDA and definitely did not play this a year ago.

It just didn't have anything appealing about it.

Your impressions of a game that you definitely didn't play because of an NDA that you definitely didn't sign exactly mirror those of other players who definitely didn't play the same game while under the same NDA that they didn't sign either!

I definitely don't understand any of this!

A number of developers behind the now-cancelled Hyenas have commented on the project's failure, and shared some of their frustrations towards management at both Creative Assembly and Sega.

Last week, YouTuber Volound issued a well-sourced report on Hyenas' downfall, including the detail that it had been Sega's "biggest budget game ever". That report stated Hyenas had been plagued with a lack of direction before it was ultimately canned.

Now, a further video by Volound has shared further quotes on Hyenas from anonymous sources who worked on its development. "I'm paralysed with a mixture of upset and anger over what's happening to my friends there," one person said.

"I feel that because [Creative Assembly] had that corporate backing, it was very much a case of ignore the bad feedback and push towards polishing this metaphorical turd into what the publisher has invested in producing," another source said. Sources said Creative Assembly bought two buildings to house Hyenas developers, such was the project's ambition.

"So much money was thrown at this project that ultimately Sega must have thought it was going to be more beneficial to not have the negative press of another failed release versus trying to consolidate their financial loss," the source said, adding that this was "something which Creative Assembly is now fronting the bill for".

Turns out the negative press from cancelling the game and laying tons of people off was worse than releasing a bad game.
