Canada extends paid parental leave by 5 weeks (currently at 50 weeks) on the condition that both parents stay at home at same time.

I felt we could use some good news here: https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/canada-to-implement-5-week-parental-sharing-benefit-1.4110069

Right now parents can share up to 50 weeks of paid leave between them after having a child (birth or adoption). They can also extend that leave up to 76 weeks but use the same amount (so just less paid per week). The new plan being implemented would add an additional 5 weeks onto the total, but only if both parents take it at the same time. The idea is to encourage more men to take time off after having a baby, with the goal being reduced discrimination in hiring practices leading to more equality in the workplace.

I support this. Stats show that right now 85% of time taken off is by women, and 15% by men (under the shared leave plan already in place). In trials the new leave plan has shown to massively increase the amount of time that men take off. The end-goal is to have men and women take the same amount of time off to care for a new child, meaning that employers would (hopefully) discriminate less against women in their hiring practices, as both genders would share an equal liability of requiring time off.

Here is a picture of Trudeau with a child for some reason:

So what's the hiring process like at this company? Wait, what? This is a benefit provided to everyone regardless of class or particular job/company?

What's the catch?

Everyone in Canada gets this. The catch is that you are only guaranteed 55% of your income for this period, up to $52,000/yr. Many employers top this up as a benefit, though (but not all).

Must be nice to live in a civilized, modern, first world country.

Our last Prime Minister appointed a judge to the Supreme Court that wasn't qualified enough (but was very conservative enough) and the Supreme Court ruled that he did not meet the qualifications, and booted him off. So we have that going for us as well.
