Vangelis, the Greek composer and musician whose synth-driven work brought huge drama to film soundtracks including Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire, has died aged 79. His representatives said he died in hospital in France where he was being treated.

 

Born Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou in 1943, Vangelis won an Oscar for his 1981 Chariots of Fire soundtrack. Its uplifting piano motif became world-renowned, and reached No 1 in the US charts, as did the accompanying soundtrack album.

Absolutely love the Blade Runner soundtracks and quite a bit of his other work. RIP, another one.

The main theme of Chariots of Fire is one of the greatest, most uplifting pieces of music I've ever experienced.

I absolutely loved his score for Blade Runner, and he did great work on Chariots of Fire, Missing, Antarctica, The Bounty, and 1492: Conquest of Paradise. I always felt his soundtrack for Alexander, the Oliver Stone movie, was super underrated, his style being very out of vogue when that film came out in 2004 but as always gave the film a surreal, dreamlike quality. He rarely did film scores, so for him to come back after 12 years away was a surprise and a treat.
