Movies Why Movie Dialogue is So Hard to Hear Lately

That's pretty much nearly ALL Bethesda Game Studios games (with the exception of those from id).  The same issues are present in the Wolfenstein games from MachineGames.

Actually Doom 2016 was one of the worst compression blanket sounding mix I had heard up till then. All the weapons had a noticeably over-compressed muffled 'thud' instead of a sharp sting. Also very 'soupy' mix. Doom Eternal sounds a lot better but the music tracks themselves are still absurdly compressed to shit. 

 

And yup, I recall that first reboot Wolfenstein sounding like total ass too and I didn't even play it that much.

Man, when I got a new tv earlier this year and that first night I just wanted some nice bright content showing the improvements in color, having moved at least to a qled and better hdr, I got so mad trying to find something because of this. Everything I kept picking I was skipping around in was so damn dark. I think finally I tried Frozen 2 just picking a random Disney movie thinking it would be colorful, and not really. Then I gave up and just tested video games which showed me what I wanted right away. 

 

Probably why video games (besides the whole this is real time and playable thing) impress me more visually than movies so often. I can actually see shit and there is often great contrast and color in scenes. A lot of movie scenes seem like they are actually trying to be hard to see even if calibrated just right.

I do believe the article I shared did touch on this specific point to coincide with how many theaters also tune down the volume all in the way of saving money for speakers & bulbs - its a systemic issue that unless you are aware & attuned to such things, most average viewers would never pick up on it.
