The move bolsters state efforts to supervise student loan servicers that are responsible for collecting federal education debt payments on behalf of the Education Department.

The Education Department on Monday scrapped a Trump-era policy of shielding companies that manage its $1.5 trillion student loan portfolio from state regulation.

Instead, the department is encouraging states to work with the federal agency to protect borrowers and hold loan servicers accountable. The agency issued guidance clarifying that while federal law does preempt state regulation in some instances, states can go after servicers for deceptive practices, payment errors and other consumer protection matters.

Sounds great as long as the Democrats maintain the White House. I suspect the second they lose the presidency, which if things continue as they are, will be in 2024, the Republicans will make things as crappy for students as they always have.

Nationalize student loan servicing companies

Nationalize Secondary Education and let loan servicing companies die a painful death kicking and screaming.

Unlike some here, im not against capitalism, but I am against capitalism in state funded Education and in Healthcare. And if private and Ivy League schools want to continue charging obscene amounts, let them, but tax them heavily, and give them zero dollars in government funding.

Or even better, just burn "Ivy Leagues" to the ground.

The GOP is definitely at the point where they don't care about consequences, only enraging their base. I'm sure all past GOP governments in modern times knew that better-educated people tended to vote Democrat, but they also knew that having better-educated people was good for America overall in terms of competing globally, maintaining hegemony, etc. But now...the modern GOP would be 100% fine with proposing a ban on post-secondary education if they thought it could mobilize their voters for a single mid-term election win. They've proven that they are willing to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of their own voters lives to keep their base angry; there is nothing the modern GOP won't do to win.
