@Greatoneshere @osxmatt

So I watched the first two episodes. There are only 8 but they call it Book 1, so this probably means more are to come.

I like what's going on.  There is a lot of action and combat but also there is an interesting story going on as well. I think people who have never heard of DOTA or have no familiarity with it will enjoy it because it requires no knowledge of the game to enjoy (so far) but IF you are a fan of the game I do think you will enjoy it more since it has some things only fans of the game will know.

Like at the very beginning:

Spoiler

OMG you see Oracle and Terrorblade wtfmate!!?!

The voicework is alright. I thought the voice cast for the game could easily be plugged into this, but Mirana and DK's voice are not the same. HOWEVER, as things go on you might recognize some voices. I guess everyone knows Tony Todd is in the show and in the game he voices DK but well you'll see :whistlin:

And I was going to post something like this related to the game after the anime came out but Siractionslacks (The guy you see in all these videos) crowdfunded a community tutorial for new players because he figured there would be an influx of new players after the anime came out.

But then yesterday Valve also came out and released a big update for newcomers as well!

Which seems pretty robust. They've updated the bots as well. They mention Siractionslacks on the update page so perhaps they're incorporating some of the community tutorial stuff in as well.

Personally I've felt out of all the MOBAs that DOTA, even if they weren't perfect (they cheat), had the best bots, but now seems like they are better. Also, sounds like next week they will drop 7.29 and a new hero!

And finally back to the anime. It appears that Miranda Sanchez at IGN enjoyed it!

Studio Mir's take on Dota 2 turned out to be a fun and surprisingly graphic adventure.

So watch with no fear it's pretty good!

I finished this up. Like I said only 8 episodes so you can get through it pretty quickly. I liked it. My initial impressions pretty much stand. There's a lot of action, not a ton of stuff for fans I think, well, other than seeing all this stuff play out. I thought at the end they'd do a surprise hero reveal like show Alchemist or something to keep you licking your lips for the next book, but no such thing. Well, it does keep you licking your lips but for story reasons pretty much. :p

I finished this and it was actually, genuinely good. I really enjoyed it - it's a lot of raunchy, R-rated high fantasy fun. I definitely wanted more by the end. I recommend everyone should give this a watch, it's nothing deep but if you've been jonesing for some nerdy high fantasy shit, this is it.

The second season of DOTA: Dragon's Blood is in production. While you wait, revisit the story of the tournament that started it all — FREE TO PLAY is now available on Netflix

Also, this post says they put the movie Free to Play up on Netflix if you're interested. Previously you could watch this on youtube and steam (for free) and it's just basically a documentary about DOTA and The International. It's really well done I'd recommend watching it, even if you have no interest in the game.

@GreatoneshereI feel like maybe I should have gone for your strat and caught up on the first book.

The show really hits the ground running taking off where it left off. No flashbacks or recaps or anything. I think this was only sort of an issue for a couple of subtleties at the beginning. About halfway through it focuses on the major thing you remember (or should remember) and it's not much of an issue.

Also like I speculated

Spoiler

CM got name dropped :o
But will she show?

Only watched the first episode, not bad, and is certainly setting up some shit to happen very soon.

Finally binged this over the last day or two - season 2 was really good! I enjoyed it, even more than season 1, though keeping the characters apart almost all season was one downside, and the lack of character interplay and quiet character interactions was missed with all the propulsive plot mechanics season 2 had to deal with. But the animation is mostly good (though not Studio Mir's best) and the music is really good. The plot moves fast in DOTA: Dragon's Blood, which I appreciated. The show is a lot like an animated The Witcher, what with the numerous similarities in both tone and execution.

One downside to the show is they really expect you to know DOTA ahead of time because I find myself often confused by characters just showing up that I don't recall seeing before and they treat it like you know them.

Spoiler

Like at Dragon's Keep, ice dragon Auroth and human Rylai show up to save Kaden, Davion, and the gang and I'm like who is this? They treat it like we should already know why Rylai is around, why she would save Kaden, that they clearly have a prior history of some sort, etc. When we meet Rylai's sister Lina, again, the show treats her like we already know who she is like we learned about and saw her in season 1 but I have no idea who she is. But you catch up to it soon enough. Another example is Rylai and Kaden stay behind for some reason (Davion and all don't even say goodbye to Kaden, he just disappears after a certain point) but Auroth comes along - aren't Rylai and Auroth together? Why would she let Auroth go off on her own and not go with? Does Rylai live in that ice cave or is that just Auroth's place? A lot of stuff like this ends up confusing watching as a neophyte.

I recommend people watch this show. The ending is also really good, I found it impactful, worth the whole season for the ending.

No, it's not as good as Arcane but it's still good.

I finished it now as well and enjoyed it. While season 1 was more of a Davion centric season season 2 seemed to be a lot more about Mirana and Lina (to a certain extent) and more about the political intrigue surrounding them. I think the animation is improved from season 1, look at all the inbetweeners in the credits! I agree that the plot moves fast but I think maybe a tad too fast. Why treat the runtime like a regular on air TV show when you could let the show breathe at a flat 30 minutes?

As for knowing who the charters are ahead of time, I don't think it's necessary. As I said with Arcane if you know who they are it's more of a bonus but if you don't you won't lose anything. I would say it's true some characters aren't as fleshed out as others at the outset but I fell there is enough info before and after to get a gauge of who they are.

Spoiler

I'm pretty sure they mention Lina in the first episode and how she can help and Auroth and human Rylai show up to escort them (I remember that being mentioned)

Now here is something that will knock your nuts off, they kept referring to Auroth as a dragon so I wasn't even sure she was in the game. While wyverns are technically dragons it would have been more accurate to say wyvern :nerd:- Also in the games she has no human form.

Also no complaints from you about Pangolier (although he's not the one from the game) :p

And Kaiden stayed behind for I don't remember reasons but gave Bram the TP scroll and said use it when you need me.

Also want to say Michael Dorn's voice is unmistakable but I thought there was no way he'd be a voice on this show. I was wrong! :o

Just finished season 2. I want more. This show proves again the potential for fantasy told in anime form.

That tweet indicates Netflix hasn’t greenlit it. That’s not a good sign. I have noticed very little press on season 2 of the show after searching and rotten tomatoes doesn’t have any reviews posted for season 2.

I hope I’m wrong to think the show may not get renewed. I would like the show to continue.
