  1. I can certainly see the risk of what you describe. However, I've decided to err on the side of the "unintentional infantilization" (or in the words of the denizens of the "Intellectual Dark Web", the "soft bigotry of low expectations" - a phrase that invariably comes out of the mouths of people with a distinct deficiency of melanin content) as I believe that the probability of "unintentional harm" is greater in the other direction.
  2. I've honestly been giving this quite a bit of contemplation in the last few years and I've gradually come around to the notion that the subjective -- if not the totality of everything -- represents a significant enough proportion that its importance is minimized at our peril. I don't know how absolute that is, but I've decided to give the "benefit of the doubt" to the expression of such sentiments from marginalized individualized, even if "only" as a means of checking my unconscious biases.
  3. My position largely comes down to this: if a member of a marginalized group feels threatened by rhetoric, I -- as a card-carrying member of practically every non-marginalized group in existence -- am in no position to challenge that individual's expression of that sentiment at all.
  4. ISW analysis for 21 February 2023: Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, February 21, 2023 | Institute for the Study of War WWW.UNDERSTANDINGWAR.ORG Russian President Vladimir Putin’s February 21 address to the Russian Federal Assembly did not articulate specific goals or intentions for the war in Ukraine, instead reinforcing several long-standing rhetorical lines in an effort to buy Putin more space
  5. In his defense, he's not incorrect that this amounts to nothing. The only people really making a big deal out of this are the World War III fear-mongering, pro-Kremlin, "useful idiots". No one in the American NatSec establishment well and truly gives a damn.
  6. When Rowlng's own gleefully unapologetic rhetoric is being used by right-wing politicians all over the world in their campaign to stigmatize and de-humanize LGBTQ individuals to the point where their being legislated (or worse) out of existence is a real possibility, then as far as I'm concerned, invoking the effect of her words in the same breath as the historical precedent that similar rhetoric has perpetuated is not beyond the pale in the least. Especially, if the individual making the analogy is a member of one of those marginalized, targeted groups.
  7. If Gotham really is across a bridge from Metropolis, then I wonder if Gothamites ever think they got the short end of the stick with their hero being a borderline psychotic who runs around in a bat suit and beats up poor people while the Metropolitans essentially have a literal freakin' god for theirs.
  8. One of the funnier/weirder theories I've read is that Gotham and Metropolis are the same city, the only difference being that it's Metropolis by day and Gotham by night.
  9. My take is that the geographic relationship between Gotham and Metropolis mirrors that of Oakland and San Francisco.
  10. Gotham is located in New Jersey and Metropolis is located in Delaware.
  11. I'm pretty sure that it was you, me, and @GeneticBlueprint versus the entire Entertainment board in that thread
  12. The church was fined $1 million and the investment firm that facilitated the hiding was fined $4 million.
  13. Certainly you more than anyone else on this board is more attuned to the effects of industry consolidation.
  14. MS's own filings indicated that they don't consider Nintendo to substantially compete with them. My personal opposition to the deal stems from my belief that anything that prevents further consolidation in any industry -- even if that consolidation "benefits" consumers -- is a worthy objective in and of itself.
  15. That identical thought has crossed my mind as well. I just don't see the "profit" in responding to xXSnyderCutFan42069xX
  16. Yes, really. Her name is Lulu Cheng Meservey, an Executive Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Chief Commercial Officer.
  17. MS and Sony aren't even "close" to reaching an agreement and MS flatly rejects (at least publicly) any remedies that would involve divestment: Microsoft signs deal with Nvidia, but is 'not close' to deal with Sony over Activision Blizzard WWW.GAMESINDUSTRY.BIZ A hearing is taking place in the European Commission today
