Codemasters announces "GRID" for 13 September 2019 release, update - reviews from OpenCritic posted

Recommended Posts

If they give it the cool story mode that the original GRID had, I'm down. If i'm some some dude with a disembodied voice talking to me telling me to sign up for races... I'm probably still down. I loved that series.

Hopefully they don't fuck it up like they did with GRID 2. Autosport was "good" but they went with Simcade and Forza Motorsport already has simcade locked down pretty tight. They need to go back to full on arcade racer, complete with the spectacular crashes.

Fuck, now I need to go back and play o.g. Grid somehow.

GRID replicates the feeling of motorsport without sacrificing any of the excitement, and it's the most racing fun I've had in ages.

A fitting return to form for the GRiD franchise, especially given the five year gap since Autosport. Doesn't take itself too seriously, so it's a title anyone can pick up and play. Would be just as at home in an arcade cabinet as it is in the console under your TV or on your PC.

Grid is a game that manages to leave behind several vices of the genre to give way to greater realism and greater dynamism in the race thanks to an improved AI and its new System "Nemesis".

PowerUp! - 9 / 10

GRID is an easy choice for racing game fans. It's a superb experience and easily the best racing game this year. For racing fans, it's a must buy.

GRID is, by and far, one of the best times I've had with a racing game. Thanks to a great mixture of arcade and simulation, with a wide variety of options to let you cater the game to you, it's suitable for everybody. Not only that, thanks to the nemesis system and AI race-master, as well as the 400 unique AI personalities within the game, each and every race genuinely feels different. Simply put, GRID looks, sounds and plays great and is arguably the best all-around game from Codemasters.

For an apparent reboot of a very successful series within a major franchise, Grid far exceeded my expectations and brought me many hours of joy. Despite not being a massive racing fan, I love the format of this game with it’s quick and easy access to the events and simple no-fluff menu system. The fact you can progress without having to complete every single event (unless looking for trophies) means it’s more accessible to everyone, especially if you include all the difficulty and customisations options. I wasn’t too impressed with the simplistic public multiplayer, but at least the private matches are far more configurable for friends to play with each other.

The return of GRID is largely a success. The racing itself stays fun throughout thanks to a clever Nemesis System, a nice variety of car classes and events that’ll keep you busy for months on end and a revised car handling model that caters to both types of racing game fans.

Grid is back to establish itself as one of the most exciting racing games in recent years. Missing a bit of courage, but the amount of cars and disciplines manages to keep high the desire to play. There are some technical limits and only 30 frames per second, but also wonderful weather and lighting management.

Once again, Codemasters has proved that it deserves a place in the grand pantheon of racing game developers with GRID. Alongside the DiRT games and F1 series, GRID is another exemplary racer that will scratch the itch of even the most demanding racing game player.

With Grid, Codemasters have crafted a fun racing experience and managed to inject some personality into the game to boot.

After five years inside the garage, GRID comes back to the track with a great reboot. It is not as fast as DiRT or F1 reboots, but it offers spectacular races on a few circuits, specially the urban ones.

Ultimately, Codemasters plays it safe with GRID, for better and worse.  There's certainly a lack of features, less modes, and a lesser number of cars and tracks than other contemporary racers.  This is a no-frills arcade racer, but a very good one.  If solid racing action is the only thing you care about, GRID has it in spades.

After five years from the release of Autosport, the Codemasters series is back in the limelight with a chapter that is not particularly innovative but extremely enjoyable and fun

GameSpace - 8 / 10

Overall, Grid is a fun racing game that gives you a good variety of options for cars and maps, but in the same token is found lacking in these categories as well. For as big as the world is, and for as many car companies are out there, you want a little bit more variety in a racing game that is spread out globally. Grid is launching today for $59.99 USD and gives you more than enough to get your money's worth out of it.

GamingTrend - 80 / 100

Grid offers an enjoyable racing experience that tests your driving skills. With the nemesis feature, a ton of racing personalities, and the flashback feature, there's a good amount to make it unique. There are some annoying track designs that drag you down, but most of them are winners.

What this reboot of the GRID franchise does well, it does really well.

IGN - 8 / 10

Grid is way too lean on tracks but delivers its hyperbolic brand of Hollywood-style racing with style and confidence.

IGN Italy - Italian - 8 / 10

An exciting return to form for the GRID franchise. This is a well thought and executed arcade racing game, with lots of events and races.

Saving Content - 4 / 5 stars

GRID (2019) is a game where you have to play both defensively and offensively, more so than in any other racing game. Races feel rather aggressive, especially from other drivers. Attacking drivers has consequences, like spinning you out. When these systems are fully in play, it makes each race feel like it matters. GRID doesn’t take too many risks this time, but the racing is intense, beautiful, and a lot of fun.

Screen Rant - 4 / 5 stars

GRID brings back the series with great success, showcasing a flexibility rarely seen in racing games that caters for everyone with little compromise.

Thumbsticks - 4 / 5 stars

The career mode is a little underwhelming, but Grid's racing is as on-point as ever. A culmination of Codemasters' years of experience – combined with brilliant assists and that oh so clever Nemesis system, that makes trading elbows with competitors as much fun as the racing itself – make this an ideal motorsport sim.

Sports Gamers Online - 7.75 / 10

Grid is its own creation, but players will see the slight resemblance of other racing games and appreciate the newest installment in the genre of Motorsports Racing. Patience is key to get a true and enjoyable racing experience from GRID, but if you are short on that be prepared to miss out on a very good title.

GamePro - German - 77 / 100

Successful mix of arcade racing game and simulation, which lacks variety in the long run. In between, great fun.

Critical Hit - 7.5 / 10

Maintaining all the trademarks that distinguished it from other arcade racers, Grid has returned boasting driving just as engaging as before. Limits are reached in some core areas of gameplay such as though such as the number of locations, and the formula may prove stale for those looking for a road less traveled.

TechRaptor - 7.5 / 10

Quote

A solid racing experience, GRID has enough under the hood to appeal to both hardcore and newcomer racing fans.

Cerealkillerz - German - 7.4 / 10

Quote

Even though GRID delivers sweet graphics and an incredible driving experience, the title suffers from a weak carreer-mode, a stiff presentation and an obsolete Multiplayer, so that it misses out any long-term motivation. Nevertheless, fans of intensive racing action should try out GRID, because its great driving mechanics still delivers enough fun for short sessions.

IGN Spain - Spanish - 7.2 / 10

The new Grid is a satisfying driving experience, but it lacks that "X factor" that makes your game unique or special.

Game Debate - 7 / 10

Quote

However, taken on its own merit, GRID is a fantastic audiovisual experience, a decent racing game, and a barebones package. It's the epitome of just enough, but enough is the optimal word here. Here's hoping the next GRID can kick on bigger, better, and more ambitious things.

Game Informer - 7 / 10

Codemasters' skill in the genre makes Grid a competent entry, but nothing more

Returning fans will remember why they enjoyed the series, but they will also realize why it hasn’t been missed all that much in the past five years without an entry.

The experience at the core of GRID is undoubtedly a great one.

Gameplanet - 7 / 10

Grid is a great looking game and features some excellent driving and physics. It's let down by a questionable damage system and boring design. From the games dull menus to no-frills racing, there's just not enough here to separate it from the pack.

GamingBolt - 7 / 10

Quote

GRID is a beautiful and well-balanced racer that successfully reboots the series but suffers from a campaign that progresses slowly and doesn't have enough unique events to make up for it.

Metro GameCentral - 7 / 10

Some of the finest simulated driving you can find on PC and console, but with a single-player career mode that's not as fully fleshed out as you'd expect for the money.

PlayStation LifeStyle - 7 / 10

Quote

The argument could be made that if GRID had been an early-generation PS4 title, it would've been a bit more praised than it will be this late in the console's life cycle. As that may be true, the title's genuinely compelling AI mechanics and multi-faceted livery of vehicles help it stand on its own as the proper reboot that this franchise deserves. It may not feature all of the bells and whistles that we've grown accustomed to in 2019, but it's certainly a solid foundation to rebuild a brand around.

PlayStation Universe - 7 / 10

Quote

With absolutely nothing new to bring to the table except the pointless 'Nemesis' feature, GRID treads water in spectacular fashion. It looks and sounds amazing, and plays like an arcade game which has aspirations to be a simulator, but with no realistic car damage to penalise reckless driving, it becomes a long drawn out affair.

Push Square - 7 / 10

GRID is a very solid racing game that harkens back to the 2008 original in some important ways.

TheSixthAxis - 7 / 10

GRID is an enjoyable racing game for those who want to enjoy some close racing without worrying about camber angles. The market needs games like this to provide light and shade. I was hoping this new GRID would be a fresh start, but it's a last night's takeaway re-heated. I enjoy leftovers – cold pizza is one of life's great pleasures – but that doesn't make the perfect racing game when the rest of the world has moved on.

TrustedReviews - 3.5 / 5 stars

Quote

GRID’s reverence for motorsport is clear and it seems that the natural audience would be die-hard petrolheads, but the arcade handling and stripped back stats are squarely aimed at casual racing fans. But if that’s the case, then the diminutive car roster and by-the-books campaign structure are unlikely to cut it.

SECTOR.sk - Slovak - 6.5 / 10

Codemasters' attempt to reboot the GRID franchise feels a bit unnecessary mainly due to its shallow campaign, and lack of content.

New Game Network - 62 / 100

Quote

GRID is an average racing reboot with no real personality. Despite the short races, strong AI, two new street tracks, and the shift towards arcade, it struggles because of so many recycled tracks, poor damage modeling, and disappointing multiplayer.

Video Chums - 6.2 / 10

Motorsport fans will have fun with this reboot, especially if they are looking to race some popular vehicles on well-known real-life circuits.

GameSkinny - 6 / 10 stars

The GRID reboot finds itself in a no-man's land of racing games: it's neither granular nor friendly enough.

OnlySP - 3 / 5 stars

GRID has firmly nailed its place in the market as one of the best arcade racing series and will remain a ferocious competitor to the Forza and Gran Turismo franchises. The cars and tracks have been beautifully crafted with explicit detail, and when coupled with the delicate handling model, command-based communication, and the Nemesis system, all create a unique, thoroughly enjoyable racing experience. However, the game suffers from engagement issues, which could be improved by implementing a photo mode and racing soundtracks. The Nemesis system needs more reckless driving from the AI and greater rewards when beating Nemeses to the finish line, to stand out from other arcade racing sims.

DualShockers - 5.5 / 10

Codemasters' attempt to revive GRID has a lot of great ideas but struggles to bring them all together in a cohesive fashion.

While the driving and races are fun, thanks to the new AI mechanics, the optimization on the base consoles is horrible and, as a full package, it feels repetitive and lacks almost all the content expected for a reboot of a way better game from 2008.

In a game like GRID, it is hard to deliver a solid driving model, strong AI, deep career mode and package it together in a way that is appealing to a racing community with multiple interests and styles. The newest GRID title will appeal to many people in many ways, and that's precisely what the developers are hoping for I believe. With so many quality racing options on the market right now, Codemasters has delivered a unique experience that should have mass appeal and deserves a spot in the rotation, especially for you offline racers.
