Really cleaned up tonight and beat Maneaters as well finally. Assholes.

Working on 1-4 now and just need to take down the final bosses for worlds 2 and 4.

The graphics in this game continue to impress me every time I play. Some of the detail and atmosphere in 1-4 is amazing.

It's some good stuff. I played more NG+ last week and I'm pretty sure I'm up to level 100+?

Graphically, Bluepoint are technical wizards. This is a stunning looking game. World 4 in particular for me is pretty amazing, from the sounds of the flying enemies to the entire atmosphere of the world. Wait until you experience the final boss of World 4 if you think the graphics have been impressive so far.

"TPS is based in statute and is a legal immigration status," said Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., making a contrast with Trump's executive order.

    Quote

"After four years of empty promises and deceit, nobody believes Donald Trump had an epiphany on his last day in office and decided to protect the hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans he was forcing into the shadows," the office of Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., said in a statement.

Trump's executive order deferred for 18 months the removal of Venezuelans who were at risk of being sent back to their home country.

"TPS is based in statute and is a legal immigration status, as opposed to Deferred Enforced Departure," Menendez said. "That is why we are relaunching our campaign to actually stand with those fleeing the misery caused by the Maduro regime."

Both TPS and Deferred Enforced Departure, or DED, allow recipients to legally live and work in the United States, but experts say the latter is a better option. "DED prevents migrants from deportation for 18 months and allows them to work," Miami immigration lawyer Laura Jimenez said. "TPS is an immigration status that can lead to a green card under President Joe Biden's immigration proposal."

So some context, at least the way I see it: Republicans have made overtures to Venezuelans as well as Cubans in Florida, and both are the reason Trump carried it by around 5 points. Obviously, what he did for them was minuscule and meaningless, but they've done a good job communicating with them for years to make them scared of Democrats.

This is not only a good idea, but it's clearly something concrete for Venezuelan immigrants.

The governor ordered a halt to nonessential medical procedures last year, which the attorney general then said applied to "any type of abortions."

    Quote

Gov. Greg Abbot ordered a halt to nonessential medical procedures in late March of last year to conserve hospital resources and personal protective equipment. Attorney General Ken Paxton then said the order applied to "any type of abortions," including medical abortions that do not involve surgery.

A federal judge in Texas declared the order too broad and lifted the ban. But the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans put it back in place. In public health emergencies, the appeals court said, a state can restrict constitutional rights including, "one's right to peaceably assemble, to publicly worship, to travel, and even to leave one's home. The right to abortion is no exception."

    Quote

In a brief order, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal and vacated the 5th Circuit's ruling.

Abortion rights advocates applauded Monday’s dismissal of the cases.

Abbott’s order was “a transparent attempt to chip away at access to reproductive health care by exploiting a public health crisis” and it was therefore “important we took this procedural step to make sure bad case law was wiped from the books,” Planned Parenthood, the Center for Reproductive Rights and the Lawyering Project said in a statement.

Biden's team appears ready to invest political capital trying to get Congress to approve another round of stimulus payments.

"It's hard for me to see when we just passed $900 billion of assistance why we would have a package that big," Collins told reporters Thursday. "Maybe a couple of months from now, the needs will be evident and we will need to do something significant, but I'm not seeing it right now."

    Quote

Sen. Mitt Romney R-Utah, a conservative who has a track record of breaking with his party, told NBC News that he isn't inclined to borrow another $1 trillion or even $500 billion for a broad economic package.

"My own view is that what's holding back the economy is Covid, not money," he said. "I want to do everything we can to get the Covid vaccines out. But once the Covid vaccine is out and people are inoculated, I believe you'll see the economy coming back."

    Quote

"I think the administration and the caucus would prefer it be done on a bipartisan basis," House Budget Chairman John Yarmuth, D-Ky., told reporters. "We haven’t made a decision yet to use reconciliation but we are, we are prepared to move very quickly if it looks like we can’t do it any other way."

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who is set to chair the Senate Budget Committee, has also said Democrats should use reconciliation if outreach to Republicans proves fruitless.

    Quote

Brian Deese, the director of Biden's National Economic Council, rebutted the Republican skepticism Friday, saying the United States is "at a precarious moment" with the virus and the economy.

"Without decisive action, we risk falling into a very serious economic hole, even more serious than the crisis we find ourselves in," he told reporters. "The risk of doing too little far outweighs the risk of doing too much."

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney -- Trials and Tribulations

Girlfriend and I finished the original Ace Attorney trilogy. I tell ya, T&T goes into the bizarre a bit more than the other games. It certainly gets less grounded overall from game to game, but T&T goes just a bit higher. Still, solutions make sense considering the evidence, and it has probably the most intriguing story told over the course of five cases. Godot ends up being a very interesting prosecutor, perhaps even a bit more than Edgeworth (even though Edgeworth is a more endearing character), and a certain villain is quite evil. I really love the fourth case, bringing you back to one that lacks an investigation and is simply in the courtroom. But the fifth was less padded and overlong than I remember considering the quality of the story.

Overall, a lovely trio of games and a great conclusion. I really hope they bring the second trilogy to consoles, but apparently the upcoming Phoenix Wright compilation needs to do well in sales for that to happen.

Europeans got more of their electricity from renewable sources than fossil fuels for the first time last year, according to an annual report from Ember and Agora Energiewende.

    Quote

The report, which has been tracking EU's power sector since 2015, found that renewables delivered 38% of electricity last year, compared to 37% delivered by fossil fuels.

The shift comes as other sources, such as wind and solar power, have risen in the European Union. Both sources have nearly doubled since 2015, and as of last year accounted for one-fifth of electricity generation in EU countries, the report found. It's also the reason why coal power declined 20% last year, making up only 13% of electricity generated in Europe.

"Rapid growth in wind and solar has forced coal into decline, but this is just the beginning," said Dave Jones, senior electricity analyst for Ember and lead author on the report, in a statement. "Europe is relying on wind and solar to ensure not only coal is phased out by 2030, but also to phase out gas generation, replace closing nuclear power plants, and to meet rising electricity demand from electric cars, heat pumps and electrolysers."

    Quote

The milestone follows commitments from EU leaders last month to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 55% from 1990 levels by 2030. In the United States, renewable energy overtook coal consumption in recent years. Last May, renewable energy sources were consumed more than coal for the first time since 1885.

I don't agree with the opinion that the Bernie thing is "old".

I think the Bernie meme is kind of like the whole country finally exhaling and allowing itself to have a fun, whimsical, wholesome joke that doesn't have to be about a madman selling us out to Russians or trying to overthrow the government.

It strikes me as almost a collective mental release valve for a country who doesn't yet know how to fully face the fact that not everything is horrible all the time anymore.

I’ve seen Trump voters sharing it, and not as an insult.

To the chagrin of Republicans, the democratic socialist senator will play a central role in shepherding Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s agenda through Congress.

    Quote

Asked about conservatives’ fears, Mr. Sanders was pointed. He said polls showed the tax and spending increases he planned to bring forward were popular among wide swaths of voters, including Republicans, even though the party’s lawmakers tended to dislike them.

“They should be worried,” he said, referring to his Republican colleagues. But their constituents, he said, should not be.

    Quote

Despite Democrats’ narrow control of the Senate, Mr. Sanders is expected to exert heavy influence over taxes, health care, climate change and several other domestic issues. That is because his role as budget chairman will give him control over a little-known but incredibly powerful congressional tool that allows certain types of legislation to win Senate approval with just a simple majority.

That tool — a budget mechanism called reconciliation — allows Congress to move some legislation without gaining 60 votes. It has become the vehicle for several major legislative efforts this century, including tax cuts under President Trump and President George W. Bush, and the final version of President Barack Obama’s signature health care bill.

The reconciliation process begins with lawmakers adopting a budget resolution, originating in the House and Senate Budget Committees, which can include directions to congressional committees on how much to increase federal spending or taxes.

The nature of the process effectively gives Mr. Sanders a leading role in deciding how expansive — and expensive — Mr. Biden’s ambitions for new taxes and spending will be.

Mr. Sanders said in the interview that he wanted an initial, emergency stimulus package to be “big.” He thinks it must include an additional $1,400 in direct payments for adults and children, on top of the $600 that Congress just passed, along with money for states and cities to fund coronavirus vaccine distribution, testing and contact tracing. He also wants to create an emergency universal health care program, so that anyone can get medical treatment during the pandemic, whether they currently have insurance or not.

This was him on Seth Meyers:

Seth Meyers: President Biden made, I think, a great effort yesterday to send a message of unity, and as someone who talked in the lead up to the election about how he is the kind of politician who has friends on the other side aisle; he wants to work with republicans, yet we're already seeing even today that Mitch McConnell is taking steps to limit what the democrats in the senate can do. Do you think there is some sort of bipartisan work that can be done in the senate or are you expecting a sort of McConnell-inspired gridlock?

Bernie Sanders: Look, I think we should do our best to reach out to republicans who represent communities that are suffering terribly in terms of unemployment, lack of healthcare, and other very serious problems --- but --- I don't think our reaching out should go on indefinitely. This country today is hurting and people are hurting really, really badly. We're looking [sic] about people and people who cannot feed their kids (literally) who are worried about being evicted, can't afford to go to the doctor even when they are sick. We have got to move and move quickly. So I think we should reach out republicans, [but] if they choose to not come on board --- which I suspect will probably be the case --- we have the majority, we should use that majority in a very aggressive way. Now I'm gonna be chairman of the budget committee which handles what we call 'reconciliation' and that is a senate process by which you can pass not all kinds of legislation but a whole lot of very important legislation with a [simple] majority vote, not 60 votes, and it is my view that we should make sure that we address the needs of the American people in that reconciliation bill, and if we pass it with 51 votes, we pass it with 51 votes.

Capcom Division 1 brought in as newcomer M-Two sees role reduced…
    Quote

The company contributed to the development of 2020’s RE3 remake, with Minami taking on an executive producer role, but the start-up’s main purpose was always to lead the next, bigger remake, Resident Evil 4.

    Quote

However, multiple sources have indicated that, following a key project review late last year, it was decided that M-Two’s role on RE4’s remake would be significantly reduced. Capcom’s Division 1 – the internal team responsible for Resident Evil and Devil May Cry games – has now been brought in to lead the RE4 project, VGC understands.

It’s believed that the disagreements that led to M-Two’s reduced role involved the studio’s desire to stick faithfully to the template of the original Resident Evil 4, partly influenced by backlash to Resident Evil 3’s remake, which did not include significant portions of the original PlayStation game, much to fans’ disappointment.

Capcom’s production team, however, is said to prefer a direction which would see RE4’s remake inspired by the original, but with its own unique take on features, story elements and environments not necessarily confined to the blueprint of the original, similar to Resident Evil 2‘s use of Mr. X.

    Quote

Sources said that the Resident Evil 4 Remake would now be partially rebooted under the new mandate, which could see its release delayed by as much as a year to 2023.

This kind of direction change is not uncommon within Capcom, the people said, and both Resident Evil 2 and 3 are said to have experienced similar overhauls during their development.

I’m not going to quibble about the frequency and convenience side of this equation, as I don’t think anyone can honestly claim that unlocking your phone is a higher barrier to entry than the nightly news or reading a paper.

But accuracy... yeah I’m going to argue that one. 15 seconds of scrolling through my Facebook feed just now and I’m seeing shit about fad diets, friends from back in the day sharing fake news about the insurrection, the election results, Hunter Biden, etc. And I’ve eliminated the most frequent offenders on those topics from my friend list but whatever algorithm Facebook uses STILL promotes that stuff.

I know we all like to shit on the NYT, WaPo, etc., for their equivocating and their whiffs, which happen more often than they should. But I’d wager that minutes a day on social media puts more falsehoods in front of your average user than a week of reading a paper or watching the national nightly news, maybe a several weeks or a months worth. And consumption of that, time with your eyes in front of that content, even if you’re reading it for chuckles or because you know it’s wrong, feeds the beast and you’ll see that shit more often within hours. Traditional media just isn’t like that at all, there’s no equivalence to be drawn there.

And I also see an abundance of good information.

The only reason you can say much of any of what you said ITT is due to your being able to do so through social media, improved search engines, and the advantages of the internet in general. The only reason you think you have a well-reasoned overall ideology is because of the ease of getting good information through all of this tech.

"The internet introduces bad things" is kind of a no shit?

Again, think of what @sblfilms has said about how 50%+ of people go to the movies... they just SHOW UP without knowing what they’ll see or when. This is fucking crazytown banana pants behavior that is so beyond my wildest dreams that it wouldn’t occur to me that ANYONE would do it, let alone HALF the people in the joint.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think he said that at all. He said that back in the day, the box office would be where people made decisions, but now the box office equivalent is looking at the lineup of movies on the site the day of, which is much different than just showing up and a totally reasonable thing to do if you want to go to the movies that day and want to see what's playing. @sblfilms I thought that's what you meant?

Long-time Activision Publishing studio will be "fully dedicated" to Blizzard titles going forward; former studio head Jen Oneal promoted to Blizzard leadership's team
    Quote

Going forward, the Vicarious Visions team of about 200 people will be employees of Blizzard and "fully dedicated to existing Blizzard games and initiatives," which means the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 studio will no longer be creating games as the lead developer.

    Quote

As part of the move, Vicarious Visions studio head Jen Oneal has been promoted to Blizzard executive vice president of development, where she joins the company's leadership team and will report directly to Blizzard president J. Allen Brack.

Oneal is being replaced in the Vicarious Visions studio head role by Simon Ebejer, who previously served as chief operating officer for the studio.

Vicarious Visions was acquired by Activision in 2005 and has worked on many of the publisher's biggest franchises over the years, including Guitar Hero, Spider-Man, Tony Hawk, Crash Bandicoot, Destiny, Skylanders, and Call of Duty.

  12. I remember before social media and search engines. I remember when search engines didn't find anything useful.

It was harder to find info as simple as, "Hey, I used to watch a show at 8 but a different show's on. What happened and where'd it go?" Never mind information on issues of actual consequence.

I think it's a bit nostalgic to think that everyone received accurate information more often and with less hassle/bullshit.
