When you point a gun at another person (except in self defence) you are a criminal, using a weapon dangerously. People buy guns for many reasons, but it’s rarely to kill innocent people. But it’s those people who are dangerous, not the gun. Almost everybody I know owns multiple guns. If you killed no one until you committed a mass shooting, does it matter that you weren't a criminal the day before? Everyone who unsafely operated a gun thought they were a responsible non-dangerous gun owner 5 seconds prior to their kid finding their gun and shooting them accidentally.
