Uh no.  Those companies did even less of note for 3DS than they did on DS.

Capcom and Square Enix did a good bit.  Altus’ support for 3DS is still a step below what they’ve done on Switch.  I can’t for the life of me remember what Sega and Namco put on 3DS beyond anime games and Sonic.

I do think if the 3DS was the only portable in town, like Switch, it might have gotten more support.  The mere existence of the Vita at the time divided developer attention in Japan.

Sony burned developers so badly on the Vita. Still, I have zero idea why it got so much support even after it was clear even Sony gave up on it. Sony sold fewer than 6m units in Japan versus the 3DS and their 25m. The PSP did 20m units in Japan, so it made sense to think Sony might do well with a PSP successor. Sony just didn't seem to care, though.

Yeah, I agree.  It’s probably because the PSP did so well in Japan and people there thought the success would cary over.  It probably would have if Monster Hunter stayed put.

I think Sony was just unable to sustainably split their focus. That and the PSP's success was likely a complete accident on their part. I'd argue that Nintendo has similarly never actually been same to split their focus between both handheld and home console markets either. No Nintendo home console has really controlled the market since the release of the Gameboy. Their best selling console since the NES was the Wii and nobody is going to convince me the Wii actually controlled anything about the home console market during the years it was flying off shelves.

It's like Sony wasn't happy with the PS3, went all in on the PS4, and totally forgot they had a new PSP launching just a couple months later.
