COP26: China and India must explain themselves, says Sharma

Recommended Posts

Also, India is dirt poor.  The more it modernizes, the more it's people will want Western luxuries, and energy use will go up considerably.  Not to mention India is already an environmental disaster just based on the amount of pollution in the air and the trash it its rivers and streets.  So to hold up India as one of the "good" countries regarding planetary stewardship is laughable.

Hmm. While it's true that India is not the main problem, that graph is per capita, and doesn't take raw figures into account.

India's total power from fossil fuels is about 40% of the US's output -- despite having more than 4x the population.

They are at about 20% of China's output -- despite having very similar populations.

Who did that?

In terms of putting carbon in the air for easy things like generating electricity -- how can the US dare point at anybody?  They and China ARE the problem.

If you are trying to create plans and policies for the future, trends and projections are kinda the point.

As an example

https://www.statista.com/statistics/270500/percentage-change-in-co2-emissions-in-selected-countries/

The level of emissions by India even in another 20 years if their trends just stay steady (and there is reason to believe the rate will increase), the amount of emissions will no longer be the sort of thing a person can hand wave away because other countries are worse in 2021.

Developed nations can do a lot to help India continue to develop but in a way that doesn’t further tax the environment. And we should as the beneficiaries of the industrial revolution and the carbon economy.

Countries need to take action -- US's plans of reductions are not dependent on what India does. The US needs to do something, rather than just point fingers at others.

How much renewable energy has been put online THIS year, not some fanciful future promise?
