One prospect generating buzz is District Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, whose expected appointment to a key appeals court could signal a future Supreme Court nomination.

President Joe Biden is poised to elevate a 50-year-old former public defender to a prominent appellate court seat as soon as next week, part of what officials say will be a broader push by Democrats to move quickly on judicial vacancies with an emphasis on diversity.

The expected nomination of District Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to replace Merrick Garland on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals could be a precursor to another promotion for her — fulfilling Biden’s campaign promise to choose a Black woman for a seat on the Supreme Court.

Biden and his team have put a premium on selecting a diverse field of candidates, seeking out civil rights lawyers and defense attorneys while deprioritizing prosecutors and corporate lawyers. Jackson hits the sweet spot in meeting their goals for both racial and experiential diversity. A judge on the federal district court in Washington, D.C., she was nominated by President Barack Obama in 2013 and sailed through Senate confirmation on a voice vote.

With a 6-3 SCOTUS, "reshaping the courts" is kind of like rearranging the meat before it goes through the sausage press, but I suppose we gotta start somewhere.

Now liberals just need to stay laser focused on the courts as an election issue for the next three decades and we'll be set.

I get what you're saying, but the main points I think of are:

  1. You never know who might drop (Rehnquist, Scalia, and Ginsburg all died without much of a prolonged buildup. Granted, RBG kept going to the hospital, but she always came out fine; she wasn't in hospice for weeks and then dropped.
  2. If Trump were in power and/or Republicans had the Senate, we'd either see more hold-ups or would get more conservative justices.
  3. Democrats have actually shown much preparedness for this to get through as many as they can in the next two years in case they lose the Senate.
  4. Biden is asking for more public defenders and civil rights lawyers, which is a big deal.
  5. Not every case goes to SCOTUS, so having more progressives in lower court is a big deal, especially lifetime appointments.

Lower courts are where most of the action happens.
