Part of the issue is that political Meritocracy and liberal democracy can be hard to resolve with one another, since the latter is predicated on the assumption of an individual’s right to completely ignore the outcomes of the former if that’s what they want to do.  Once you no longer have the right to vote for the unqualified, meritless huckster running for office, you’re no longer really living in a liberal democracy.

China is a good example of this.  It’s about as close to a pure political meritocracy as you will find in any large country—but it only gets there by virtually eliminating democracy except at the lowest levels, and having political advancement purely depend on peer and superior performance reviews and concrete results, with entrance into public service depending on passing a (quite difficult) competency examination.

Judging by the past 20 years, the 21st century is going to belong to China. I'm thinking a one party state, with democracy only existing at the lower levels is perhaps the ideal solution. Local politics tends to not have the partisan bickering that occur at provincial/state and federal levels, and from what I can see things actually get done when partisan bickering is removed (when the provincial and federal governments don't interfere).

Waves are coming everywhere. Korea is over 300 cases, the highest since August. There have been several outbreaks at saunas, who the fuck wants to go to a sauna in the middle of a pandemic???

To parahphrase Field of Dreams, if you open it, they will come. The question isn't so much "who the fuck wants to go to a sauna," the question should be "why the fuck are saunas open in the middle of a pandemic?"

Yeah, it's not good. Mask mandate is good, as is the limit on gatherings...but people need to stop seeing people altogether for a while. Also, the definition of "public place" for mask usage doesn't include office cubicle spaces, which is so dumb.

If Moe hadn't said "if you're going to meet with a friend, I encourage you to do it at a restaurant," I wouldn't have been very bothered by today's press conference. Shutting down visiting to long term care homes sucks but probably makes sense. Mask mandate for the whole province makes sense. Limiting gatherings to 5 is an extreme but we need to take extreme measures.  "Please don't invite a family member to your apartment for coffee. Instead go to a restaurant where there's 50 other people" does not make sense. I guess it's just him signaling that he's not going to shut down restaurants.

  4. I don’t think @CitizenVectron posted about this yet...

Our provincial government just had a press conference this afternoon and the summary of what the premier had to say is as follows:

    1) Long Term Care facilities are being closed to visitors for the next month.

    2) the limit for gatherings in private households has now been reduced to five.

    3) the premier says if you want to meet with your friends or family, he strongly encourages you to meet in a public area “such as a restaurant.”

RIP. Good thing I just built a gaming PC I guess because I don’t see this getting better any time soon.

I remember last week before the election I was talking about how we would be hitting 100,000 cases per day right around election day. Which led me to a grime calculation that even if Biden won we would double our Covid numbers by the time he took office in about 12 weeks. We would go from 10 million cases over about 7 monthes to 10 million more in 3.

At the time I used what I thought was a pretty horrible 100k per day over the next 12 weeks. A little over a week later and we are rocketing to 200k per day.

To bring it back around to Riley's post, 250k per day by Thanksgiving may be a conservative estimate at our current rate.

What the fuck does the fallout from Thanksgiving look like if we go into it at that number?!

One million a day by New Years. And from the looks of things, Canada won't be much behind (per capita anyway).

China stamped out COVID-19 within months and has responded to small outbreaks by testing entire cities in days.

This should (but won't) be seen as a strong condemnation of western society. China showed us the way to control this pandemic but we just couldn't do it.

They were able to clean up this virus in a few months, while we're probably not going to even have this mess cleaned up by next year. It's not just this pandemic I'm thinking about. This is just the first chapter in the book of how China wins. There's going to be more problems like this in the future, and every time China will do what they do best and that's working together as a country to solve it. All the while we'll repeat our bang up performance we've shown with coronavirus: We'll bicker rather than listen, we'll fight against any slight inconvenience, and we'll continue to show that we just... don't care about each other.

  8. The Chinese government is trying to use a "maintaining law and order" justification for its change to the extradition laws. I don't know if it's new for China to use that rhetoric to justify more stringent laws (I doubt it) but it certainly shouldn't be a new form of rhetoric to anyone on this board. It's a huge stretch to say that he's "threatening" Canadians. What he's saying is no different than someone saying "we need to increase restrictions for sex offenders; if you care about your children's safety, you should agree with me."  It's not a threat at all, and it's completely absurd to suggest it is.

And based on the discussion in this topic, I guess Chinese troll farms are going to be the next liberal boogeyman.

On Spanish speaking social media. There are a TON of conservative religious memes and Trump quotes going around that friends and family keep sending me on WhatsApp. The most egregious ones saying stuff like Biden is looking to pass anti-church laws and then get all the churches in the country shut down.

It's crazy and I'm assuming there's some Spanish-speaking Russian out there churning these things out.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicated he plans to keep Canada’s borders closed as long as coronavirus cases remain elevated in the U.S.

That's the most direct language he's used so far. From the sounds of it, he is being pressured behind the scenes bug time by Trump.

I don't know what the polling is on the border closure but I can't imagine there's much opposition to it in Canada. I haven't heard anyone I know personally say that they want the border opened. On the other hand I've heard quite a few people make jokes like "Yeah I want it to open it in November.... 2022."  If Trump was to try to make a public spectacle of this, it would probably increase Trudeau's approval rating among Canadians. That border is not going to open any time soon.
