What condition are these TVs generally in?  I want to buy it as a gift for my brother but I don’t want a dinged up tv

It's refurbed by LG, not used, so it's as good as new. Big difference between used vs refurbished; on a manufacturer refurb, they replace everything/anything that's damaged or not working and also include a mini-warranty. :sun:

    Manufacturer Refurbished

Crazy good deal if you’re on the fence about going 4k. This is basically what the 55” goes for and, AFAIK, there’s very little difference between the 2017 B7 and the 2018 C8

PS: Mods, I have no f’n clue where to put this. Maybe “sales/deals” should get its own prefix for the VG board since it’s the most populated? I didn’t want to put this on the Entertainment board since the VG board is more popular and I did not want someone missing this deal.

  3. Ethanol is a terrible gasoline replacement whether it's sugar or corn. A car running E85 (via a tune if the engine is E85 ready, which is typically 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) will get ~70-80% of the mpg of gasoline... and it costs more per gallon (without subsidies). Electric vehicles are certainly the future and where money should be invested.

My problem with this website is that there are many instances where you have the image derived from a 2K digital intermediate where it looks better than another movie where the image was derived from a 4K digital intermediate.  Sometimes movies with a 4K DI are just softer looking because of the source film or the way it was shot.  You really, really , really can't use this site's "Real 4K" or "Fake 4K" as any kind of indication of picture quality.

The term "fake" has a much harsher connotation than this site should be using as in the description it does tell you whether or not it looks good too.

For example, it lists Disney's Coco as "Fake 4k" BUT states:

    Quote

It is not real 4K in any material way due to the animation being rendered in 2K.  Studios have upscaled the 2K image to 4K for your 4K UHD TV.  You should see some visual improvement over a standard 1080p Blu-ray.  Animated CG movies scale up very well and can look like Real 4K.

    And for Thor: Ragnarok:

    Quote

It is not real 4K in any material way due to having a final master at 2K.  Studios have upscaled the 2K image to 4K and retouched the content for your 4K UHD TV.  You should see some visual improvement over a standard 1080p Blu-ray.

So, it does at least state whether or not the "fake 4k" is still a good/worthwhile transfer. I just think that "fake" is a more offputting term than they should be using.

  5. I greatly enjoyed my rental of "Game Night" in UHD Dolby Vision. It doesn't have a lot of "OMG" scenes, but low-lighting in the movie definitely shows the capable differences in the way the actors are lit in scenes in regards to fade and shadows... Plus, OMFG is that movie funny.

BTW, @Mercury33 , I'm guessing the rental info I found prior in this thread is outdated as UHD rentals on Vudu are the same price as HD; just $5.99 for new movies in 4k Dolby Vision, and some are cheaper (ie: Thor Ragnarok is just $2.99 right now in UHD DV). :sun:

I have the cube -- and I agree the biggest advantage is that Alexa>Cortana.

Up until 2 weeks ago, Xbox was my streaming box....

I have Cortana disabled and still use the OG commands. :p

Cortana is made to compete with Alexa for home integration/control so I still have no idea how the comparison could possibly be “silly” when Cortana was made to be compared to Alexa/Siri/Google Home Assistant and the original Kinect commands were basically just a beta version of Cortana. :p

Comparing the 2 is a bit silly , one was a nice add on feature and the other offers almost complete home integration.

It’s not a silly comparison at all. The cube is literally made to do the same thing the One’s Kinect already did and does, it just also integrates with Alexa. The reviews for the cube speak solely about the TV functionality and is the only thing being gushed over.

  8. I think the most amazing thing about all this is the fact that people bitched and moaned about the TV/device control for the Xbone to the point that MS rolled down to just basic support (which is still more efficient than using a remote control), but now Amazon does the same thing with the Fire Cube and reviewers/people are gushing over it claiming it’s one of the “best innovations for device control ever”... when MS literally had the same “innovation” 5 years ago. :/

World Cup? I guess I haven't missed anything then :p All my demand stuff I get from Amazon or Vudu. It's all in 4k and HDR. But your point is very valid. Weird that they did that but I can see why they did that.

Check that link, you have several 4k channels available, as well as UFC Fights, MLB, concerts, etc. :p

I really cannot understand the omission considering their hype that the X is “the” 4k console. The addition of an HDMI 2.0 compliant input would be pennies more and make the console “fully” 4k.

That's definitely a bonkers thing to do. But I guess to be fair DirecTV and a lot of other cable companies barely even support 1080p content. Everything on my DirecTV "HD package" is 1080i. If it's the built in apps you are better off with the Xbox apps or the LG apps for that stuff.

DirectTV supports 4k HDR content, I believe The World Cup was broadcast in 4k. :p

Honestly, it’s more about when on demand begins to stream movies/whatever in 4k HDR. It’s likely going to be awhile before any network films or broadcasts in 4k, but movie streaming on demand in 4k is “later this year”. :/

It's almost as if a whole bunch of people complained about MS focusing too much on Tv/multimedia so they decided not to spend extra time and money on it.

Then why keep the HDMI in?

The HDMI in was/is actually popular and commonly used on the Xbone, the Kinect was not.

  12. Got a 4k TV (finally). I like using my Xbone to control my cable box and use the HDMI-In that the One X has. Noticed that my cable box still says that the max output resolution is 1080p. I do some searching and see that the box I have definitely is 2160p capable, figure I’ve been using an old v1.4 cable and swap it out, still 1080p max. Plug the cable box directly into my AV Receiver, now 2160p is available, back into the XboneX, and back down to a max of 1080p. That’s when I decided to google... and apparently MS made this 4k console but left the HDMI-in incapable of 4k and HDR pass through with an old HDMI version. Granted, there are few live broadcasts available in 4k (occasionally sports events and things), but my cable box supports several apps which stream 4k HDR content and supposedly 4k HDR content is coming to on demand “soon”. It’s more annoying than anything, but WTF MS? :/

OMG, that is sooooo very untrue.  HDR done right is amazing!

I haven't actually played a ton of games in HDR yet, but Horizon Zero Dawn makes fantastic use of it.  Whenever I play it on a TV without HDR it makes me sad :p

Yea, watched an HDR YouTube clip, the highlights around enemies in the info-mode or whatever look way better in HDR with Horizon

So.... are you still regretting buying the TV or is that starting to fade?

It's true - I'm sadly lacking in the audio department.  My old 5.1 receiver doesn't even have a single HDMI input or output.  It's pretty old.  So yes, everything is going into it using the optical cable.  I would love to upgrade to a Dolby Atmos system, but I don't think I'll get my wife's blessing on that any time soon.

Movies seem to look great. Games... even when I figured out GoW, I’m not sure I really noticed the difference - I mean, there was a difference, but I think it was more from being rendered in 4k vs the previous super sampled 1080p I was playing in. Forza 7 had no difference either, maybe during replays there was a tiny difference. :/
